Just very comfortable. The location alongside the river added interest and was perfect for access to the city. The staff were particularly pleasant and helpful. There was no problem leaving our suitcase in a safe and spacious area after check-out. We found the hydration stations particularly convenient and useful.

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

    Frankly, a disappointing experience.

Frankly, a disappointing experience. The shower was painfully tiny, and the sink impossible to use without splashing all over the floor. Bar/restaurant staff were cheerful but poorly trained, inattentive, and confused on the menu and on prices.

Durham is a small , beautiful city : It is mostly stone-buildings - I don't think it was ever bombed or 're-developed' so the town centre is stone and old and cobbled. Much is pedestrianised. There is a market -hall which is worth a visit plus market - day -( don't miss the recycled - jeans stall !). There is a nice diverse atmosphere here and you can eat your way round the world here from Sushi to Mid-Eastern via Italian with all kinds of cafes .I particularly liked the one next to the library - coffee and paninis .The students give a youthful buzz to the city and people talk to each other here - I found locals and students alike helpful and ready to chat to a visiting stranger . The cathedral is stunning and part of the community - altar to the mining community - most amazing stain glass windows I've ever seen including modern designs as well as medieval . I didn't visit the castle as it is guided tours only which i tend not to like but it too looked interesting . There are interesting walks everywhere and plenty of green spaces and trees - the river is not turned into a drain and continues beautiful through the city with walks along it and boat trip options . The bus service deserves a mention - £ 2.50 wherever you are going it seems and frequent - so they are well used , busy and , again, friendly . There are museums like 'The Story ' I did not have tie to visit . The Botanic gardens are a lovely place to visit with a lot of space and amazing variety of plants and trees - and the whole managed for wildlife which is good to see. All is in walking distance if you are reasonably fit with plenty of accessible buses too.

Great city with an amazing cathedral, good night life with some really excellent restaurants. The Market Hall has good stalls and managed to find some good vinyl records at one. We will definitely visit again.

I enjoy visiting historic buildings and museums so the Cathedral, Palace Green Heritage Centre, Oriental museum, and The Story were good. Durham has lots of character and is compact and easy to walk round if hilly streets are not a problem. The walk along the riverbank is lovely and peaceful. Bus services seem good and a visit to the coast at Seaham is easy. There are plenty of cafes and restraints to choose from and the indoor Market is worth a browse.

Durham is an excellent place to visit.

Durham is an excellent place to visit. Lots to do and see in the city itself and in the surrounding area. The cathedral is the highlight and we would recommend a visit to Raby Castle which is only 35 minutes away by car. Durham city itself is compact and easy to get around on foot.

We'd definitely stay here again The rooms were a fair price when the other hotels in Durham were ripping people off because it was graduation week at the university
