FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

Durham is a wonderful old city, with cobbled streets, a Cathedral and Castle. The University has an Oriental Museum and a Botanical Gardens which are both worth visiting. There is also the opportunity to hire a rowing boat on the river or take a 1 hour river cruise.

One night in Durham is not enough!

One night in Durham is not enough! I should have allowed more time. I did get to have a good walk in the University section, and go to se the incredible 12th century Cathedral. It is much lower key than a big city, and I like that.

We have been visiting Durham and the surrounding area for the past four years and we love the City. Apart from a couple of months in the summer it is always full of students from the various Colleges related to the University but the place itself is so full of history. There are so many places in and around Durham that are worth a visit but I would suggest that the main one is the beautiful Cathedral. We love walking and it is probably the easiest way to get around the central area of the City and enjoy the river walks etc. Be warned Durham is very hilly and some of the walking areas you might find challenging if you are not used to hills. There are many good restaurants in Durham but I just want to mention a placed called Vennels Cafe. It is not the easiest place to find but it serves fantastic food and if you're a cake lover you will be in heaven.

A great place to visit with lots to see and do.

A great place to visit with lots to see and do. The Cellar Door restaurant and Rudy's pizza place were our favourite places to eat. There is a plethora of eateries to suit every taste. The Cathedral is beautiful and there are lots of shops to browse around. It was very easy to get around and there's a great Uber service when you tire of walking up the hills! Loved Durham.

Sadly we visited during the university 3 day graduation period so we couldn't go into the castle or the cathedral - sadly this information didn't come up on any of the sites we had looked on when we researched our visit. Riverside walk was nice, will need to come back

the location was ideal - just a very short walk to the city centre. there was plenty of parking. staff were friendly and check-in was straightforward. the room was very clean and comfortable (only downside was that there was no electric socket near the mirror, which is the norm in hotel rooms!!), inc. hairdryer, iron/ironing board, fan. Breakfast was included and although the continental choice wasn't that great, the cooked breakfast was lovely.

So glad we stayed here. We were worried about how far the hotel was from the city centre but we needn’t have been. We used Uber for just under £8 per (very short) trip. Beautiful surroundings to wake up to. The food in the restaurant was amazing both dinner and breakfast. The chef is ace and we look forward to going back in the near future.
