We took a taxi from the airport and a local bus to Knossos but otherwise everything was easily accessible on foot. There are a range of shops from ordinary supermarkets to tourist stuff to up-market. The ice-creams were everywhere!
The town is nice but the authorities could make much more of it: we went past a huge park which was closed to the public, the Old Town is surrounded with a bastion, but no obvious access to the top of the walls. The city map we picked up is completely useless to a tourist.

Heraklio is a great location to visit several key historical sites e.g. Knossos Palace and museums. It is also a great location to stay and serve as a base location for day trips to other villages/towns within Crete or even other islands.

The hotel staff I interacted with (from more than one hotel) were all super friendly and helpful. Heraklion is a lovely little town however the cab drivers are all shifty sharks that charge you whatever they think they can get away with. Actually, there were a couple of cab drivers that were OK but most of them ripped me off

Beautiful squares with music, fountains, trees and always the sea nearby. The musea are from outstanding quality. Excursions from Heraklion to beautiful spots all over the island are possible and very well organised. The public transport, buses, are on time and reliable.

Heraklio town is very busy in September , full of tourists including large groups of cruise passengers. Most days 3 huge cruise ships were parked up. Lots of great things to do including the Koules fortress, very interesting with a great cafe on the roof. We walked , about 30 mins, to the Archaeological Museuem , busy with big groups going round, so much to look at though , set in a beautiful modern building. Another museum we especially enjoyed was the Historical Museum of Crete down near the water. It had a great display and was very quiet , much more enjoyable. We also caught the bus to Knossos, we had booked for 16:00 and although there was a thunderstorm , at that time of day it was very quiet and had few people there. We were disappointed that so much of it seemed to be all the added concrete , difficult to see what was original , so am not sure I would recommend it

I had read that if you hadnt been to Crete before that this is where you should stay. We were not a fan. After numerous lovely smaller islands, Crete seemed like a big place with some cool historical features and many areas that were all inclusive beach fronts that could be anywhere in the world. Crete was the most expensive leg of our Greece journey due to the ferry cost. There are definitely some lovely places here (we rented a car and worked hard to enjoy Crete by removing ourselves from Heraklion) but it does not have the quaint or lovely feeling of the smaller islands. Educationally it was likely good but i would never recommend it to others visiting Greece.

See reviews by guests who stayed at hotels in Heraklio
An absolute gem at Heraklion centre. I have visited almost every hotel at Heraklion for business purposes mostly but this is the first time i get so excited! Everything here is designed for the guests shake, with style and comfort. I loved the bed and the pillows the wallpapers too...great job on the breakfast box too that i added upon arrival ( quite enormous for me but i took it with me when leaving hotel). + Booked me a dinner table at a great fish restaurant near hotel with discount!
Sofia ist an average hotel close to the airport. It has no highlights, everything is as it should be – but also there is nothing to complain about, which makes it better than most other midrange hotels we encountered on Crete.
The hotel was very well situated, a very short walk from the centre of the town and nearest supermarket. The hotel staff were also extremely helpful and friendly. Good value for money.
The smell of the breakfast area every morning was hypnotizing and was an amazing representation of traditional food from Crete as well as the usual hotel breakfast items.
If I do return to Crete I would definitely try to stay at the Castello City Hotel. Facilities staff, cleanliness, position were all 10 out of 10. The cost was reasonable
