As a big foodie, I recommend Skopje if you want to have great traditional meals for low prices (my favorites are cooked and grilled cheese, baked bean and meat dishes). There is also a number of fun bars and pubs to go out (if you are a beer lover, you must try both Skopsko and Zlaten Dab beers). Speaking of monuments and architecture, you are able to see interesting combination of Christian, Muslim and socialist architecture. There are also some newer and a bit controversial buildings in Greek style, but some of them are aesthetically pleasing too. I must say that I did not have time to visit much, but even a little sightseeing can show you how rich Macedonian culture and history is.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
The city was super easy to get around.
The city was super easy to get around. The people were friendly and the food was delicious. We felt very safe and loved learning more about the history of the city as we walked around. We enjoyed walking about a mile out of the city center to have lunch and dinner in more suburban areas and the atmosphere of the city was amazing! a very interesting city, steep with history, but also ambitions for the future. It’s a very eclectic blend of the old, the very modern, and a mixing part of diverse opinions, and cultural heritage. Most locals will tell you before anyone else that as a capital city, it lacks the certain cachet that many other capital cities of Europe have, but it makes up for this in its own interesting presentation and story. The city has a beautiful Ottoman-style bazaar — one of the best I've seen in the Balkans. The main square is also quite impressive, and the central streets feel open and spacious. However, I must say that the city did not feel very safe to me. I’ve had a previous experience with theft here, and during this visit, I noticed a visible presence of loiterers and individuals around the main square that made me feel uneasy. The city is an intriguing mix - there are old sections like the multiple markets; gleaming new construction, both high rise and neoclassical; but also derelict structures from the war. I found it very walkable, with some terrain (mild hills) up near the old city walls. Car drivers are aggressive and often race towards pedestrians in cross walks. The few megamalls are mirror images of most big malls in European cities. Can recommend both cathedrals, and the brewery above the old Market near the fortress walls.
