Lindeth Howe

Hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere

Once owned by children's author Beatrix Potter, Lindeth Howe country house hotel is set in beautiful large gardens, just a 5-minute walk from the banks of Lake Windermere.

We found Lindeth Howe to have a perfect combination of comfort, quality furnishings & stunning garden/views. Breakfasts were a real treat with a combination of buffet & waiter service. Management & general staff are warm & welcoming, yet discreet, & form the backbone of the hotel's success. This has resulted in repeat bookings from satisfied guests. We intend to be one of them! A solo guest wouldn't feel uncomfortable here. There is a Beatrix Potter theme, but with a modern twist, & isn't overdone. It mostly attracts couples, but there were 2 extended families, & a sprinkle of Japanese guests while we were there, which added to the atmosphere. Bedrooms are not huge but have high ceilings & very comfortable beds. The well carpeted corridors ensure a peaceful nights sleep.

Very comfortable, clean, good food and outstanding staff and service. Lots of character. Great location if you want to get away from the madness in Keswick. Great walks from the hotel. Incredibly dog-friendly. Key thing was the staff - genuinely excellent (Sam was outstanding but everyone was top notch). Going back soon, our new 'default' for the Lakes !

FAQs about hotels in Lake District

Poetic Artistry at its Best

The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.

A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.

A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.

In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

Windermere is a lovely little town with lots of character, some nice galleries and gift shops, easy to walk around. The Lake is magnificent and the ferry trip well worth it. My Mountain Goat Beatrix Potter tour was excellent, giving a wonderful overview of the area as well as specialised information.

I liked the ease of getting around from Keswick on local buses . There is a good selection of shops restaurants and pubs . There are lovely walks nearby from very easy to more challenging . There are lovely parks within the town with great views and we enjoyed a stroll in the evening after dinner as it was light so long in June when we visited . The town is full of character even though it has so many amenities . One of our party visited the pencil museum and really enjoyed it

Penrith is a lovely small town with good independent shops and cafes/bars, a castle and pretty parks. Only stayed one night but had a fabulous Italian meal which was very good value for money, great staff and pretty location. Definitely worth a trip and much less busy than nearby Keswick. It's only a few minutes to Reghed too, which is always worth a visit if Only for an ice cream 🍦

Beautiful area, lovely shops without being over faced. Pleasant craft fair and the queue wasn't too bad for the Grasmere gingerbread shop. Lovely walks which could either be fairly flat or a little more challenging. Excellent public transport, we walked to Ambleside and then caught the bus back.

Great location and beautiful looking hotel and spa, two night stay, bed size real issue, very small double, well used bed, dated hotel. Pool and sauna and steam room was ok, pool cold. Food great on valentine's night, waited very long time after asking multiple staff for a drink. Second night restaurant food, not good cold food, kitchen staff argument and lots of ppl getting the wrong food. Staff look like they have been working 16 hour shifts. Unorganised mess at times, very short staffed. Hotel needs an injection of cash, spent on it asap. Get rid of the awful curtains..
