I'm an American volunteer providing non-lethal support for Ukraine during the current conflict. Like all of Ukraine, Kharkiv is under a US "Level 4 - do not travel" restriction, but I've had no issues.
There are air alarms, but if you are conscious of your environment and make good decisions, you will be fine. It's all about statistics and luck.
The people of Kharkiv are warm and welcoming. Trsnsportation in the city is working - metro, bus, Uklon, Uber, etc. The food is wonderful and the prices are low by western standards.
I particularly enjoy the rynoks (markets) throughout the city. You can find anything from car parts to soviet memoribelia at very reasonable prices.
There are many volunteer opportunities in the city and I can't wait to get back - I am at the end of my 3 month tourist visa and am applying for an extension.

I move through Kharkiv regularly in my capacity as a volunteer and aid donor to Ukraine. Kharkiv pre-war a beautiful city like most large Ukrainian cities. Kharkiv at the moment during the crisis is a different city totally, very different to Kyiv or Lyviv where for the most part life goes on and everything is open and functioning. The current Kharkiv has lost its soul slightly in that many have left and not returned, it is very quiet and deserted in many places and there is still extensive damage to the Northern suburbs and even in the city centre. There are still regular air raids and regular shelling and attempted attacks from Russia, but people are trying to get on with life. So if you wanted to explore a beautiful city at a time when it is less congested, probably a good time. Please don't let my comments deter you, as any tourist dollar is needed and people need to also see visitors as it gives them stamina and resolve knowing people have not forgotten. Kharkiv is a big city and spread out over a large area, it has two real contrasting sides, one which seems quite industrial and the other a mix of modern and old historic structures among parks and greenery. As for amenities, Kharkiv still has all you need operating at the moment and you can get very good deals on accommodation given the current climate.

Kharkiv is a city for Youth!
Kharkiv is a city for Youth! A lot of young girls, students, international students make it EU city like and even more. Very good fine dining as well as casual spots ) Cheaper then Odessa (a bit more expensive as Lviv) I did not expect to be so authentic in the downtown (but clean)

Shevchenko Garden Park which surrounded the Nemo Hotel-
was delightful. Loved the clean, manicured grass, the outdoor fitness
equipment , the wonderful stairs leading down to more fountains.
Sumskaya St is fascinating. Filled with all kinds of shopping. Leading
to the main square. Kharkov has a definite , young vibe with all
of the college students out between classes. Endless coffee shops,
and where else does coffee sell for less than one U.S. dollar?

Nothing very nice and interesting to see or visit, but a quiet and safe place, a lot of good restaurants, quiet parks, very low prices, good people, etc.
Download an App for taxi...or walk! Public transport very low cost...
ENJOY!
The best hotel to feel the real Kharkiv vibes, it's the third time I've stayed here. But now unfortunately, we have to think not only about the vibes but also about safety while staying in the city regularly attacked by the russians. Just in case there's a blackout, there was a flashlight and a rechargeable lamp, at the reception you can also get candles. The hotel has a basement in case there's a rocket attack. The rooms itself is very cosy and convenient.
Dacha is located 7 km from the city center (taxi 180 uah). You can still hear the main road but its not noisy, and the air is far better than in center. In summer this is probably the best place in town! In winter maybe not., as the superp outdoor facilities are closed. Dacha has a relaxed charm, its high quality but still down to earth, and quite ukrainian. Its simply a real and nice place! The restaurant is very good, and the menu ua-european.
Location is great, near the metro station 'Botanichniy sad'. Comfortable bed with a curtain for privacy, all the amenities are provided for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is fully equipped. Everything is new and comfortable. Very friendly staff, administrator Valentina is speaking very good English and will take good care of you :) hostel is quiet and safe! If I come back to Kharkov I'll choose this again.
Every time I visit Kharkov, I stay at City Club Hotel. The staff is always warm and friendly. The location is very close to the airport and 15 minutes distance to the city center. The rooms are at average condition, not luxurious, but very clean. I would like to thank to Svetlana and all other front desk personnel that I cannot remember their names. I will visit you again in a short while :)
Fantastic little hotel a short walk from central Kharkiv. I had to find a place to stay very last-minute, and noticed this one was right across the street, so I had no expectations. It was a lucky find. The room was small but very modern and cozy. The bed was very comfortable, it had a great bathroom, and the staff were really friendly. Very happy with my stay at an excellent rate.
I loved the location. I walked out side and within 3 minutes I could be at a small eatery or coffee shop. A couple of more minutes and I walk into the best mall in Kharkiv. It's centrally located. Considering the location traffic noise was minimal. The bed was very comfortable. The appliances I used all worked.
It is the first hotel I prefer to stay in Kharkov. Although it is a bit far from the city center, transportation facilities eliminate this disadvantage. All staff are caring and helpful. Thanks to those who carefully prepared the reception and breakfast. Long live 🇺🇦Ukraine!
The house is really clean and all facilities are there . It’s comfortable for 1/2 people. I didn’t have any problem with the host , I’m not Ukraine but I was able to communicate well with her , she speaks well. Be ready to use cab everywhere cause it’s not in the center .
hotel was so clean and at restaurant the food is so tasty thanks for your chef , housekeeping , barmen , yulia and specially Viktoriya that she is so helpful at restaurant
The hotel was very clean and comfortable. Personnel at the lobby were super helpful and spoke English well, which is a rare in Ukraine :) I totally recommend for everyone.
Absolutely loved my stay—this was my second visit to this hotel and it was just as fantastic as the first. Highly recommended, and I'll definitely be returning!
