This is a wonderful property with exceptional staff. Wonderful amenities with sell of tickets to the castle and to Kamikochi, with free rides to the train station, although it is a very short walk. Our only complaint was that they do not have central air and we were very uncomfortable 🥵They gave us fans and with the window cracked at night, it became a little more bearable. I’m sure in the middle of winter the rooms are very comfortable as they do have heating. Not sure if they have central air that at some point in the year they switch to cooling, but this is 3rd week of April and during the day can get quite warm in Matsumoto.

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
This was a wonderful family run Ryokan.
The staff were very warm and kind, gave good recommendations and offered bicycle rental to better navigate the city.
The room was clean, comfy and welcoming.
The public bath was excellent, designed very nicely and you can feel the good qualities of the bath.
After checkout they even gave their visitors a lift to matsumoto station !
To summarize, best service quality and overall kindness that I've received in any hotel I've been to (Japan or elsewhere), facilities are clean and the room is cozy.
the hotel is in a perfect location, 5 minutes walk from Matsumoto station with many connivence stores next to it. the reception was extremely kind, offering free drinks in happy hour every evening. the best part about the hotel is the bath house and amenities. a lot of free amenities and comfortable pajamas offered. and the bath house was so peaceful. next to the bath house your could find a free massage chair that is a great touch. comfortable stay with a spacious room and a luxurious bathtub.
This is a very cosy small hostel located 20 min walk and 10 min bus ride from Matsumoto station. Matsumoto castle is a 5-10 min walk and there are many restaurants in the area. It is especially suitable for people who like to cook themselves. The kitchen is very clean and well-stocked with even a little toaster oven. The staff is super friendly and helped us call car rentals and restaurants when not speaking Japanese was an issue
This was the most wonderful place we stayed in our month in Japan. Three nights of keiseki dinners, each better than the last. We had a huge comfy tatami room, the onsen were fab, the staff were incredibly kind, dropping us into town each day and collecting us in the afternoon, making it easy to enjoy marvellous Matsumoto. Totally recommend it to anyone who wants a homely feeling ryokan with top end food.
Breakfast was amazing. A great mix of buffet Japanese and Western. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, it was a short walk to touristy Cat street where you can pick up some cute souvenirs and snacks, and we also walked a little further to Matsumoto Castle which was fantastic and well worth the effort. We chose to taxi to and from the train station (around $7 e/w)
Hotel is pretty new and modern.
Room was cozy and everything was super clean and shiny. On the first floor there is an onsen, you can also get a pajama and as many amenities as you want.
Staff was nice and professional, location was also good (only 10 min away from the station). Matsumoto castle is 5 min alway.
Bed was really comfortable, I had a good sleep.
The hotel is close to Matsumoto Station and is in a lively area. Shops, restaurants, and shopping centers are just a few minutes' walk away. The room was clean and had a TV, own bathroom, hair dryer, small fridge, telephone, electric kettle, and complimentary tea bags. The staff were nice, and you get free room cleaning service (or change of linens/towels).
We loved our stay at Matsumoto and this hotel was a large part of it. We had a lovely room, loved the breakfast and the hotel’s location.
One of the highlights of our stay was the massage that we booked. My wife said it was one of the best massages she ever had so if you plan to stay at the hotel, it’s highly recommended.
A lovely traditional onsen/ryokan in a town not far from Matsumoto City. The room and hotel was very clean and quiet, and it was only minutes away from the bus stop to Matsumoto City. There were hiking trails up the hill, and the onsen temperature was perfect for relaxing. The staff were very kind and caring.
We loved our stay at Ryokan Seifuso - one of the best places we stayed during three weeks in Japan.
Very comfortable Japenese style accomodation, with bikes to ride and a delicious breakfast.
We also found our favourite restaurant of the trip nearby - a local ramen and fried chicken place - Kawashiyo.
The hotel's location is very good, a short walk from both the train and bus stations and not far from Matsumoto Castle and several museums. Service was friendly, and about as efficient as one would expect from a rather busy "business" hotel with its crowded breakfast area and check-in/check-out crush.
bit far from city centre, but walking distance from train station - about 5 min and about 20 min to Matsumoto castle, free afternoon drinks - coffee, tea, cold drinks, even matcha latte, free night ramen, nice onsen on the top floor, great breakfast, no shoes in the hotel, because of tatami floors
The location was further from the station than we realised but was close to the Castle which was a wonderful experience.
The Art Museum was also a worthwhile visit as the world famous Matsumoto-born artist Kusama Yayoi has a permanent exhibition.
Excellent location, opposite Matsumoto train station and next to Bus terminals ..Check in 10F , free welcome drinks, tea and coffee . Friendly staff.. Convenient store on the ground floors. .Lots of eateries around the hotel
Location is one of the best charm point of the facility. Both castle and station are reachable within 10 minutes walk. And still in the quiet river side. Kura, Japanese old style warehouse, is now rare and sound me nostalgic.
The hotel is perfectly located to visit Matsumoto Castle, the room was very spacious and clean. Very happy with our stay here and would happily suggest it to anyone looking to visit Matsumoto!
Clean and recent rooms. The hotel is at a walking distance to the station and sightseeing places of Matsumoto. I also had a very cheap price for the quality of the hotel.
Traditional Ryokan in the center of Matsumoto..
The Chef cooked for us a delisios multi course Japanease dinner and breakfasts. We loved everything about the place.
