We like to hop on local buses and tour the city. All-day tickets are EUR 2.50, and we consider them good value. The Botanical Gardens are worth a visit; apart from the amazing plants, they are a little oasis of calm in a busy city. The locals are amiable and found a couple of old British tourists an interesting item. The place does not operate like Spain, and tourism does not change their way of life. Good-value fish and pasta dishes can be had almost anywhere, but we had to seek advice and pay heavily for a much-needed bit of prime beef. The city has many Piazzas (open squares), with more monuments and architecture than can ever be appreciated in a week or two.
It's a beautiful city if you can see beyond the grit. Catania is for those who expect amazing food and lovely nights but know that is not Switzerland-like. If you expect a "doll's-house", this might not be the place for you. Contrary to popular belief, I think it's a pretty safe city (and people are really nice!)
We were disappointed with all of the graffiti on buildings. The city felt dirty and gritty. We enjoyed the castle. World War II museum was interesting but would have been helpful to have more English explanations. There are so many beautiful towns in Sicily that we would recommend skipping Catania in preference for other towns.
The city itself has a good atmosphere and is quite inexpensive with some good eating places. The bus service is extremely good with cheap local buses. Coaches to Syracuse and Taormina cost only 10 euros return and took approx 1 hour. Unfortunately it seems a very rundown area outside the city itself with derelict and abandoned buildings everywhere. Be aware of being ripped off by places and check your bill carefully. Taxis are horrendously expensive but if you are waiting at a bus stop cars will stop and offer to take you for half price fare.
Catania is a vibrant city with plenty to do and the locals are friendly. Good shopping and plenty of bars and restaurants. The only downside is that there was a lot of dog mess on the pavements so you have to be careful when walking.
Catania is a UNESCO world heritage site, and we visited many historic sites, churches & museums. We took a day tour to Agrigento and Villa Romana del Casale. We did two roof walks, with great views of Mt Etna. Easy to get around the city on local buses. Great Indian restaurant near the B&B. I liked the fish market, my wife not so much. PS we're in our seventies.
Although on a busy street in an unattractive area, it is very conveniently situated for travelers using CTA airport - we wheeled our roll-aways there in maybe 7 minutes. Arriving dead tired, with food in hand that we bought before leaving the airport, it was the best solution for an early night. It is a one-room studio that has everything you need, nicely and thoughtfully appointed. The owner was aware of our flight delay, when we called she came over with the key in less than ten minutes (there is no reception).
