FAQs about hotels in Linz

Vibrant Cultural Hub with Steely Dedication

Surrounded by lush mountains, Linz is on the Danube River, and although known for industry, has become a vibrant cultural hub. It was an important centre of the Holy Roman Empire and Emperor Friedrich III lived in the castle.

The old town centres on Main Square, site of the Christmas market and elaborate Trinity Column. St Martin’s Church is Austria’s oldest, and the largest is the new cathedral, much more elaborate than the old cathedral. On the surrounding streets are shops, restaurants and much of Booking.com’s Linz accommodation, including luxury city centre hotels and cheap guest houses near the train station.

A riverside park contains the Lentos modern art museum, colourfully lit at night. The excellent arts scene also encompasses the Linzer Landestheater, Brucknerhaus concert hall and the Ars Electronica Center which hosts its own festival.

The Design Center Linz event venue is near the industrial powerhouse – the Voestalpine steelworks, whose tour showcases the factory once supervised by Hermann Göring. A more chilling World War II reminder is Mauthausen concentration camp to the south-east.

Across the river are Johannes Kepler University and Pöstlingberg mountain, ascended by a tram that passes the zoo. At the top are a viewing platform, church and the children’s Grotto Railway, and south-west is Linz Blue Danube Airport.

Just enough to see and do for a weekend trip: the Ars Electronica museum is great, especially the 8K cinema, and we also enjoyed the Lentos museum, the mountain tram up to Postlinger (and the fun Grottenbahn ride at the top), wandering around the old town, and walking in the park beside the Danube. For food, the Jack the Ripperl ribs restaurant was so good we went there twice, and the takeaway pizza from Numa was delicious.

Nice city to spend a couple of nights at a leisurely pace. Old town is interesting and lively. Lots of good restaurants. Ice cream/Gelato is a must for summer days. Going to mountain top Postlingburg (and see the church and city view) is a trip everyone should take.

Linz is a beautiful city located along the Danube River.

Linz is a beautiful city located along the Danube River. Nearby, the Pöstlingberg hill offers a fantastic viewpoint with panoramic views of the entire city. It is a lovely place to spend some time, especially during snowfall, and you can even see magnificent deer at the top. In the city center, there is a large and impressive cathedral that is very well built. The food in Linz is excellent, and the city also hosts the ARS Electronica Museum, which is a must-visit for science and technology enthusiasts. Overall, Linz is a great city to visit for one to two days. Its proximity to the Czech Republic and Germany makes it an ideal stop for travelers. I had a very nice experience.

Linz is an industrial and admin centre on the (definitely not blue) Danube river . Small airport with (as at July 2025) 2 flights a week from London STN. Pedestrianised town centre with a mix of old and new architecture gives no clue that the pleasant clean town has an active steel works. No special tourist draw but a reasonable base for touring and onward travel, Large Danube cruise ships stop at Linz but most passengers are sent to Salzburg by coach and make minimal contribution to the Linz economy.

Linz is a small town and unless you plan on visiting other towns around or some hiking don't expect to be entertained for multiple days. The fact that it is a small town has its upsides. There is no rush and overall the city center is rather quiet compared to bustling metrolises of Europe.

We were traveling by car. Having an underground parking(extra fee-12 EU) in the middle of the city was a real benefit. The City Center Apartments Linz is administered by the Hotel Schwarzer Bär (I think they are the same part). It has a kitchen area and a fridge. For a one night stay it is a good option. It is near to the center so you can have a nice walk to the Ars Technica Museum and to Mozarthaus etc. Room was quite spacious. The room was prepared , clean, with bed linings

Extremely good value for money accommodation in the heart of the city center, close to Linz HBF. It has large rooms and comfortable beds. The flexibility and friendliness of the staff is worth mentioning (we didn't get the room we booked, but the hotel staff immediately remedied the problem by providing us with another room). The delicious and generous buffet breakfast is also worth mentioning.
