We are from Colorado so it was similar to Breckenridge or other small mountain towns. There are plenty of hills in town so it was a great "walking exercise experience." There are plenty of grocery stores and cheaper than the US. The situation of the town is beautiful!

Great location for those who want to travel in the province of Salzburg. We went for a walk on Ghost Mountain (the cable car a few hundred meters from the hotel). We took a trip to the Lichtenstein Gorge - this place is a MUST! Its five-minute drive - during busy times in the summer, it's convenient because you can start the day there when it's not too busy and hot yet. The trip to other attractions and sites is also short and the hotel itself is very close to the highway for those who want to reach sites such as the salt mines in Hallein, Hohenwerfen Castle, Salzburg and more. The town of St. Johann im Pongau has many shops and the area has some good restaurants with local food.

The city has all what a tourist needs.
The city has all what a tourist needs. One may say typical Apline city, but has it's nice unique spots - for me: the old bridge neighbourhood (I'd say the old town). As it is located on a slope for me it's more pictureous than others located just in a valley.

Sank Johann was a very pretty town with a good range of shops, restaurants and cafes. We were there for the Skiing so did not spend a lot of time in the town, or at some of the attractions. However I have been coming to Sank Johann in the winter since 2009 and have never been disappointed.
I have never visited in the summer but I can only assume that it will be also be an excellent base from which to explore the area.
Bus service is excellent and Salzburg is only 1hr 15 away. €11 by train and does not require you to change trains.

The mountains around St Johann im Pongau are wonderful, the town its self has changed a lot. It used to be the main place to stay for winter sports in the area, but this has slowly been superseded by Alpendorf where there are a number of modern hotels and apartments (often moderately expensive).
This has caused a lot of the change which includes many of the great bars and restaurants closing and being replaced by some modern residential buildings (most recently the Silbergasse which we all loved).
Of course, if you stay on the edge of town, or a little up the hill (as we did this time), then there are beautiful places to stay. The remaining Hotels like Alpenland, The Brückenwirt and the Lerch and others can also be highly reccomended. Recently, the local Hahnbaum chair lift (where we started skiing in the early 80s) was removed and not replaced. That used to be a great place to ski with the locals on a Sunday after a later night out at ski lovers bar (also long gone). A beginner's area with a T-Lift and Banana lift still exist on the Hahnbaum, but in general you will ski out of Alpendorf (5 minutes drive up the hill), or you just have a short drive to many of the other "Salzburger Skiwelt" areas such as Großarl and Hoch König to mention just 2 out of many.
The town has expanded somewhat over the years, on the plus side this gives plenty of scope for food shopping if you are staying in an apartment. It is a town that many (like us) still love as we have been visiting for so many years, and it is always great to see familiar faces when on a winter holiday. The local people have always been extremely welcoming and very friendly.
Some prefer Wagrain, which has retained its quaint mountain village / town atmosphere and not as crowded as Flachau. Close by is Kleinarl which is a perfect Family resort.
For us, St Johann was and still is the center of the Salzburger Ski Welt, and we will hopefully be regulars for many years to come.

Absolutely wonderful, the views are stunning.
Great home cooked food, and wonderful
Rooms.
A lovely host who took care of all her guests.
The drive from the main road is quite a challenge in winter, but that was because we are not used to driving in snow and ice, but once you have done it once, it’s fine.
The views are just stunning, which makes the drive worth it.
The only hotel l would return to in this area.
Food was very good. It would be perfect to have chicken hotdog sausage for breakfast instead pork one.
Dinner was also very good and lot of choice.
Our room was big and conformable.
We liked a lot spa area and the pool.
It was very good temperature all over hotel we never felt cold which is a big plus. Once you exit from the pool trough corridors to the room you dont have be worried to get cold or sick
Perfect place for skiing, as it sits directly on slope. You can put ski on at hotels door and finish the day at the same place.
As usual in Austria, you will love the cuisine, restaurant is great. Room was good enough, no complaints about equipment, but i didn't expect anything above standard. Mattress was quite tough, i like that. The walls are maybe a little bit thin, you can hear a lot sometimes.
Perfect hotel, everything was great, on the day of check in we arrived late and they was about to close the buffet, so they called us to check when we arriving to save us food. For all days of stay the personal was great. There is kids room in the basement and it was great. The rooms are very clean and cool. The dinner time is from 18:00 to 20:00. The breakfast is from 6:30 - 10:00.
It was Great stay at alpendorf! The room was clean and comfortable with big balcony. Bathroom was also very clean and warm, the location od property od Great, about 2 minutes od walking to first ski lift to alpendorf. Staff was friendly and comunicative. The breakfast was also very good and with a lot of types of food. My Reccomendations!
The food was amazing, both breakfasts and dinners - great selection and high quality.
The location was execellent for us - we had a hire car, so travelled to numerous different ski areas during our stay, from doorstep skiing, to 20-30 mins drive away.
The staff were really friendly - I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel.
The Host waited for us till we arrive and gave us the apartment key's ( we arrived late after midnight from Munich). The apartment was clean and very nice furnished with sauna (for those who like sauna). Location was just next to Alpendorf Ski site (5 min walk) in St johann. view from the apartment was of a hart filling.
Very nice location with an amazing view over the hills. Friendly, helpful owner that gave us a lot of good advice and was ready to accommodate all our requirements. We really enjoyed our Alpendorf sky trip and looking back to return.
Breakfast was not that rich in choices, but quality local food provided.
The breakfast was very varied, the spa facilities/pool are top notch and the ski bus stop is located right in front of the hotel. The fact that the ski passes could be purchased/printed at the hotel and that the ski/snowboard rentals could be made directly from the hotel as well are also big pluses.
Brilliant location - short walk from the station, really close to the stop for the ski bus, shop downstairs for buying lunch and snacks. Lovely breakfast - I particularly liked the fruit salad. And the owners were really friendly and helpful - very much appreciated!
Staff there were really nice and friendly. The hotel is located around 1200m in elevation and overlooks the valley, surrounding by mountains like above clouds. The owner prepared our room with such a nice view. They have a restaurant with great food!!!
Staff was amazingly helpful for late checkin after midnight. Breakfast was far above average, really amazing (and I travel lots, seen tons of hotels in Austria). Also Lobby and Breakfast room are designed amazingly.
I was the only guest at the hotel, with early outs for my geology work. The owners were So accommodating and they had beautiful breakfasts ready for me. Great balcony and view.
The location is peaceful and serene. Very relaxing. Raimond and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the pool and the spa area after a day of skiing.
