Despot Slav Hotel & Restaurant, hotel in Melnik

This hotel is located in the historic town of Melnik, next to Melnik Museum. The Despot Slav Hotel offers a unique stone and wooden interior design as well as traditional Bulgarian cuisine.

Sizeable clean rooms, good sized beds and rustic furniture. TV sets with English, Bulgarian, French channels. Bathroom small but clean and as you would expect normally. Restaurant and hotel with romantic fireplaces and actual wooden log-fires. Picturesque village with lots of hotels and restaurants, people friendly and want to help. Very friendly personnel, the ladies in the restaurant and reception were helpful despite very little English language knowledge. Small streets and limited parking in the area - but remember this is a village. Nearby is a village museum that opens at 9am.

Melnik is an absolutely gorgeous town with amazing old architecture and Pyramid rocks towering over the town. Its really hot here during summer. A hotel with a pool highly recommended. The people are friendly. Service and food is great. Being a well reputed wine region the wine everywhere is very very good. Everything is walkable in the main centre. So many restaurants to choose from. Make sure you make the hike to the monastery. The views from the top are spectacular.

Melnik is a very beautiful village, stay there but do not eat at the local taverns if you are not bulgarian. Very expensive, they charge double price compared to what they charge to the locals. You can have exceptional food quality and half prices at Petric and maybe at other nearby villages

Melnik is lovely with lots of wine to try. Good for hiking too. Walking to the monastery is a must! It does NOT have a pharmacy. Finding basic things like paracetamol was a nightmare. A kind member of staff from a hotel gave me one of his arthritis meds.

Regarding the hotel - everything was perfect - the room, the breakfast, the staff. The hotel also has an excellent location - on a walking distance from all wine cellars & restaurants. Melnik itself is the Bulgarian wine capital - so go there anytime you visit the country. And do not miss the Museum of the wine.

Melnik is the smallest and also my favourite town in Bulgaria. Its wine culture, its architecture and the nature surrounding it, are unique. If I would take my foreign friends to any place in the country, Melnik would definitely be in the top 3. Fully recommend!

Hikers, nature lovers, photographers and wine lovers should...

Hikers, nature lovers, photographers and wine lovers should not miss this town, which is known as the "smallest town" in Bulgaria with around 200 residents. It's one of the few places where nature has shaped big sand pyramids, some of which can reach a height of 100 meters. There are unlimited possibilities for hikes from the town, the most popular are to Rozhen Monastery and to a church in Zlatolist where a 1,300-year-old platanus tree is located. The town sees many tourists and plastic pollution is a big problem, like in most of Bulgaria. Soon there will be more discarded plastic bottles than pyramids here.

We loved just about everything ! What a great experience ! After 2 nights there we really felt at home and didn’t want to leave ! Kaloyan and Sofia were amazing hosts and amazing cooks! Don’t bother eating in the restaurants in Melnik, eat in the house, everything is home cooked with the freshest local products ! The house itself is very impressive with beautiful view over Melnik. Definitely ask to visit their cave! Hotel is pet friendly, beds are very comfortable…. We will be back for sure !

The room is very spacious. The hotel is just huge and atmospheric with nice garden and nice and very big dining room (we had there served breakfast). Just downstairs there are plenty of restaurants. The view of the sandy hills from the hotel is outstanding. There is very beautiful and easy walk path via forest along sandy river with sandy hills view starts just 100 meters from the hotel and ends up in Rozhen monastery (2 hours walk)

Location was perfect, right in the heart of Melnik and parking was still no issue! The host was very welcoming and kind! The aircon worked very well, the windows also could open, and one even had mosquito net! The matrass and pillows were comfy and the whole place was very clean. We enjoyed the breakfast at the restaurant downstairs, the Bulgarian mekitzi with feta cheese were great!

The hotel or maybe better said boarding house is in a typical Bulgarian house in the upper part of Melnik. Very nicely and originally designed, cosy. The rrom was equipped with the neccessary stuff and had a nice view on the village. Very friendly staff resp. owner. Excellent WiFi. The breakfast was served as a choice of different dishes and was freshly prepared.

Very nice hostess who was able to use her phone to translate her Bulgarian to English. Impeccably clean hotel. Easy walk to downtown area, and plenty of room for parking by European standards. As a small 6 room hotel, there is no dining area, but we were able to go to the hotel next door for breakfast on weekends, or a two-minute walk downtown otherwise.
