FAQs about hotels in Sofia

Balkan Jewel at the Foot of a Mountain

Sofia is the Bulgarian capital and its largest city, situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the very center of the Balkan Peninsula. With a variety of architectural styles, picturesque scenery and easy access to outdoor activities, this city is a definite must-see!

From well-preserved city walls built in the 7th century BC through to the early Medieval buildings. From the 4th-century Rotunda St. George and 10th-century Boyana Church with its stunning 13th-century frescoes to Socialist-era monumental constructions, Sofia is a real treat for history lovers.

Most of the popular landmarks are located in the Oborishte district, the most central part of the city featuring plenty of greenery, cobbled streets and the most popular landmark, the Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

Sofia has plenty of natural sites too, including the renowned thermal and mineral springs, the primary reason Thracians established the city here before the 7th century BC. Enjoy a walk in the most popular parks, the Borisova gradina or the impressive Vitosha Nature Park with more than 6,500 acres within the city limits.

From hiking to skiing on the Vitosha and from sightseeing to relaxing in mineral springs, Sofia has plenty of fun for everyone! On Booking.com you can find nearly 190 properties in the city, from 5-star central accommodations to convenient hotels near Sofia Airport.

What Guests Said About Sofia:

Some older buildings need maintenance.

Some older buildings need maintenance. The underpass of Sofia's Central Train Station, with its deprecated small shops, needs a total up-do. Newer builds look very good quality. Public transport is quite good, but taxi rates look overinflated. Signposts on even major roads could be confusing or totally absent. The grocery shops are very well supplied, prices comparable to the rest of Europe. All in all, a decent trip.

Sofia has a mix of modern and older times.

Sofia has a mix of modern and older times. In the city centre most buildings were renovated since the 1990's and look fancy. Also a whole range of cafés/restaurants from fancy to basic. It's worth not only sighsteeing within in the city but also to take bus (or your car) into the Vitosha mountains next to the city for beautiful views, fresh air and hiking. In terms of facilities it's well served everywhere, Public transport is cheap and very well organised. Payment by bank card, no cash needed. Overall price level is ok (2026). (Likely this will change in the forthcoming years now that Bulgaria has switched to Euro as currency). In the city centre and with the young generation you can get around with English. Otherwise it can get a bit complicated. It's worth visiting the typical tourist spots from any city guide. Sofia centre is not that big so you can do a lot by walking too. The Serdika ruins, fundaments of the ancient city are worth exploring (and for free). I visited the National Art Gallery (near Alexander Nevsky cathedral and it's worth a visit. Foodwise you'll find plenty of sites (especially via Google maps). I relied on the reviews and didn't get disappointed :-) It also worth considerings day trips to surrounding sites like Rila monastery or the city of Plovdiv (with our without guide)

Very nice city to visit for holiday to relax and shop.

Very nice city to visit for holiday to relax and shop. Most of the sites, shops, restaurants, bars, etc. are near to each other in walking distance, so it is not very tiring for tourists. The transportation means are excellent: there is no need to use a taxi to go anywhere. The metro / bus / tram routes are very frequent and can take you anywhere in the city, so it will not be a problem to book accommodation far from the center. With the 72-hour card, you can get as many rides as you wish within this time frame for the metro / bus / tram routes. Would suggest downloading the "Moovit" app. The negatives are that the locals are quite rude to foreigners and most of them do not speak English, so would recommend knowing in advance where to go and what to do, and avoid asking around when you get there. Moreover, the shop owners and adjusting the prices from Leva to Euro on their own, not according to the actual currency convert, so you might end up paying slightly more in Euro than in Leva, so it would be good to carry Leva in cash as well.

It's a gem!

It's a gem! We enjoyed 1 evening (pause on the way to Greece) visiting the city center with a free tour, had a great chance of tasting the essence of the city history and architecture. Pleasantly surprising, eclectic, modern meet heritage, nature is respected and valued and cherished. We'll surely come back for more!

Absolutely perfect for autumn, winter and spring.

Absolutely perfect for autumn, winter and spring. Lack of air conditioning in August means I gave it a 9 instead of a 10, but the fact that I did not notice this before booking was my fault. Grocery shopping was close. I walked to the metro, a bus is available but not necessary. Easy communication with the manager on WhatsApp. I posted 2 pictures of the back of the apartment building, very nice.

We stayed for three days and its a pretty city but does have a few draw backs. You do have to watch while walking the pavements are not good. The public transport is very easy to manage and is a very good price, there are some new trams but for the most they are very old and have no air-conditioning and if like us we went in summer its uncomfortable. The attractions are lovely especially at night with the lights one. Loads of restaurants and coffee shops.

We arrived late at night and the owner welcomed us without any problem. It's an old Bulgarian house converted into a modest hotel. They offer free coffee and tea, and there's a garden for eating or smoking. The owner allowed us the next day to store our backpacks for the day until our departure. The location is very central, close to Serdika and the city's various attractions. Recommended for a short stay in downtown Sofia.

This boutique hotel is a highlight of a city trip to Sofia, offering warm and welcoming comfort in clean and stylish rooms. They feature everything travellers need for a couple of days, including amenities for tea / coffee. It is cozy to hang around in the common lounge room, having (self bought) breakfast or just a coffee. The staff is very friendly and also open for a talk about nowadays Bulgaria.
