All meals, incl.breakfast, were very good, compliments to the chef! The staff were welcoming, friendly, and efficient, especially Oriana and Pablo. The best of them all was Gabriel : when my husband left his phone on the back seat of the cab, Gabriel offered to help, taking the trouble to contact both the taxi company and the restaurant we were driven from, found the cab driver, and we got the phone delivered back to the hotel!! One thousand THANKS to Gabriel from Elizabeth and Eugene! This is what I would call hospitality.

FAQs about hotels in Rio de Janeiro

Sassy City of Samba

Home of samba, Brazil’s 2nd largest city is sassy, seductive and spectacular. The Rio Carnival is legendary the world over for outrageous costumes and infectious rhythms.

Host of the 2014 World Cup final in Maracanã stadium and the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, Rio de Janeiro is forward-thinking. High rises line Ipanema beach and you can find dozens of rollerbladers on the promenades at any time.

The hottest spot is Copabacana, a great place to try biscoito globo, a typical Rio beach snack. Sip a caipirinha here while the sun sets over the bay and mountains – it's unforgettable, but the fun doesn't end there. Clubbing in Rio is fantastic and ranges from techno to traditional bossa nova. Bohemian beats can be found in Santa Teresa and Lapa, where trams pass over a double-arched viaduct.

Overlooking all this from Corcovado mountain is iconic Christ the Redeemer, welcoming the world to Rio with arms outstretched. Take a cable car up to this statue on the edge of lush Tijuca Park for incredible views. Accessed by cable car, Sugar Loaf Mountain is also not to be missed.

Rio de Janeiro Airport is well linked to the ‘ Marvelous City’, but traffic can be manic, so leave enough time to reach it from your Rio hotel, apartment or hostel booked through Booking.com.

We're retired seniors.

We're retired seniors. Rio did not have much for us to see and do (ie no Roman ruins or world class museums). But the beaches, the sunshine and the mountain backdrop gave us a glorious escape from Winter (We live in South America where its winter in August).

Amazing city, breathtakingly beautiful and the kindest people on earth! If you stay in „zone sul“ where most of the tourists stay it is quite safe. But being alert and street smart is key. No walking around with expensive stuff.

Beautiful city with great food.

Beautiful city with great food. We went to Christ the redeemer, Sugarloaf mountain, booked a private tour guide for Tijuca Forest and Santa Teresa on the yellow tram. But sadly got my phone stolen by a man on a motorbike on our 5th day there which highlighted the dark side of the city. We got offered drugs a lot when walking along the pavement parallel to Copacabana beach but never felt threatened. Police are stationed at lots of areas in the city but for good reason. I told an English speaking waiter about my phone and he smiled and said Welcome to Rio!

Just walk and walk and walk….every area has a very distinct personality. I haven’t finished my trip yet so I don’t know what the highlight is yet. I went running pretty early and was one of very few people out- that was quite magical. I ended up on one of the sane streets later in the day and didn’t even recognise it when it was full of people.

Rio is a big South American city and one needs to take basic precautions, such as being very careful with cell phones (it could easily be snatched from your hands on the street). With those basic precautions, a good time is to be had without a doubt. It is incredibly beautiful. I would advise against the hop on-hop off "Samba bus"--the AI translation is not good at all and it's too expensive for what you get. You are better off with a private tour guide for the day. Also careful with tours that are supposed to pick you up at your hotel--they may miss you and then you're SOL with no way of getting your money back. If you are in Leme/Copacabana, go down to the fort at the end of Leme and go up the hill there if you are able. The area is managed by the Brazilian army. It costs only 10 reais (US$2) per person to get in (free for small children and people over 60) and you get great views. You can also walk at Pista Cláudio Coutinho in Urca, near the Sugar Loaf, for free--beautiful views as well. In Urca, go drink a caipirinha (or whatever) and eat a pastel at Bar Urca towards sunset, sit at the wall there and appreciate the view/the sunset. You're welcome :-)

Rio has this big energy that you can feel as soon as you land in the city. It’s an amazing place with amazing people, you can see everywhere a mix between modernity and nature which gives it a real charm. The only thing is to take caution of your belongings while walking outside, but I’d definitely recommend ✨

Very spacious and well appointed clean room, extremely comfortable bed, fresh towels given daily, lovely view of Copacabana beach from our 13th floor bedroom, view of Christ the redeemer statue from pool top floor, staff were helpful and friendly, breakfast was nice, location excellent and safe. The beach is across the road from the hotel. The supermarket is 2mins walk away. Buses to Ipanema nearby and there’s a taxi rank right outside the hotel entrance!

The Arena Hotel is a nice hotel with the advantage that it is located at the point where Ipanema and Copacabana meet so quick and easy to walk to either. It has a small but pleasant pool on the roof with views over a small beach. The room was comfortable with a good shower. Staff were friendly and helpful. I know many of the main hotels in the area but will return to the Arena next time as it has the right balance of comfort, location and price.
