We stayed in a hotel located about a 30-minute walk from the city center of Basel. Conveniently, there was a tram station just outside the hotel. However, getting to the center usually required at least one transfer—typically two trams or a combination of tram and bus. Fortunately, Basel’s public transport system allows the use of multiple modes of transport with a single ticket. Alternatively, Uber is also available and quite affordable—especially if you're traveling with others, the cost can be comparable to buying multiple tram tickets.
In terms of cleanliness, the hotel was satisfactory. The rooms were clean, and the bedroom was decently furnished, featuring wood-style flooring. Although we didn’t need it during our stay, heating was available via radiators and an electric heater stored in the wardrobe. However, there was no air conditioning at all, which might be an issue during hotter months—luckily, we visited during a time with mild weather.
The mattress was too soft for our preference, and we found the bed sheets folded on top of the bed rather than already set up. We had to make the bed ourselves, and the linens were quite wrinkled.
The bathroom felt outdated, with old tiles and a very worn-out faucet. The bathtub had a divider, but it was of the traditional type—part ceramic/plastic and part curtain—which made showering a bit less comfortable.
There was also a coffee machine in the room with a few complimentary capsules, but unfortunately, the machine didn’t work.
On the positive side, daily housekeeping was provided, and considering the overall price compared to other hotels in Basel, the cost was reasonable.
Overall rating: Sufficient, especially given the price.
The family-run GAIA Hotel Basel can be found right across from Basel Main Train Station, only a 10-minute walk from the historic city centre.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and the breakfast was superb in a really nice traditional room. The hotel staff clearly went to a lot of effort to think of the nice extra little touches like pillow choices, and the beds were comfy.

At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant. With Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica on its outskirts houses a well-preserved Roman theatre, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colourful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodation on Booking.com ranges from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March you might just catch Fasnacht: Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to see it start though - 4am!
The tram system in Basel is extensive and impressive.
The tram system in Basel is extensive and impressive. You can get anywhere in the city within minutes. Basel Old Town is beautiful and not to be missed; many buildings in continuous use date back to the 1300s. And look for the cute little ferry across the Rhine that uses the river current for its power; worth the 2₣ fare.

A great city with plenty to see and do all within walking distance. The Basel Pass, issued when checking in at the hotel, provides free travel on the excellent public transport system as well as discounts at many museums and attractions in the city and surrounding area. Basel's location on the borders with France and Germany means it is easy to visit the Alsace region and the Black Forest and the Swiss Alps and lake are easily reached by train or car.

Perfect for a 1-2 day visit. If you consider going, definitely consider staying in an accommodation within Basel itself, because you get a Basel card which gives you free public transport and half off on almost every interesting attraction in the city. My favorite was definitely the zoo.

Great breakfast and the price for Switzerland is amazing for what you get at this hostel. The concept of Switzerland where you get a free travel card is a very big plus: with the Basel Card that was provided it was easy (and free) to use public transport in the city. Within 10 minutes at the citycentre and a busstop in front of the hostel accommodates you to the nearby trainstation.
BED!!! There was a free option to get a double bed for one person! Loved it. I liked the room setup too. The location was comfortable and easy to access via various lines of trams available. Definitely met my expectations with its lower prices compared to rest of Switzerland. Free coffee and tea whenever was nice.
