Switzerland Through the Ages
At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant. With Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica on its outskirts houses a well-preserved Roman theatre, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colourful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.

If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March you might just catch Fasnacht: Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to see it start though - 4am!

Basel is a beautiful city. If you're an Art lover like me, then visit Basel! It has interesting museums to visit. Take a walk along the riverside, and for just CHF 2, make sure to cross the river using the cable-powered boat. The tram system in Basel is extensive and impressive. You can get anywhere in the city within minutes. Basel Old Town is beautiful and not to be missed; many buildings in continuous use date back to the 1300s. A great city with plenty to see and do all within walking distance. The Basel Pass, issued when checking in at the hotel, provides free travel on the excellent public transport system as well as discounts at many museums and attractions in the city and surrounding area. Basel's location on the borders with France and Germany means it is easy to visit the Alsace region and the Black Forest and the Swiss Alps and lake are easily reached by train or car.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Perfect for a 1-2 day visit. If you consider going, definitely consider staying in an accommodation within Basel itself, because you get a Basel card which gives you free public transport and half off on almost every interesting attraction in the city.
