The city is a sprawling typically grid designed place.

The city is a sprawling typically grid designed place. It has an excellent metro. There’s actually more to visit than you think at first not least the Museum of Memories that should be a must for everyone. It can feel a bit edgy in certain places and at certain times but by using a bit of common sense it shouldnt be an issue. The coast is around 90 minutes away and there are many options re vineyards. Arriving during the day by bus from Mendoza was a highlight. Give it a go!

Very cool neighborhoods (Lastarria, Bellavista, Italia...), beautiful architecture, plazas, and history, vineyards close by, even bird watching in the foothills! Lots of great restaurants, bars, cafés and shopping. Uber is cheap and fast. The market area (not just Central Market) is a sight!

Maybe I didn't give it much of a chance, but I was bored by the first night. It's a pretty modern city, and I like other South American cities more -- Cuzco and Buenos Aires come to mind. I did like that it was close to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar and there were lots of bus connections there. That said, there were some special moments such as watching a small crowd doing a procession for Good Friday and enjoying a delicious meal at Bistro Gaetan.

A wonderful, colourful city - what I would give to be back there once more! Would recommend getting lunch at Mercado Central, visiting the Cathedral in the Plaza and going up Cerro Santa Lucia and Cerro San Cristobal (the latter is the perfect place to catch a sunset!). The Bellavista and Barrio Italia neighbourhoods are really fun and lively. It's a good idea to go to Valparaiso for a day, but would urge doing so with a tour group. And something else I didn't expect: Chileans take Sunday as a day of rest very seriously, so streets tend to be very quiet then!

Santiago has a number of hills surrounding it.

Santiago has a number of hills surrounding it. The most major of there features a cable car and a statute of a religious virgin figure on it. It's quite a walk up it but it's worth it. At the bottom of the hill from the entrance is a long bar street which I found excessively commercial and tacky. There's plenty of graft t here too , adding service charges which I believe is illegal ( and you don't have to pay them. ).Also adding a 25 per cent mark up for salt on your glass. That aside Santiago is easy to navigate with a good subway and plenty of decent more local restaurants. Another of these hills in the administrative centre features a large free folly type castle structure with a park which is free and well worth visiting. The downtown area has a very heavy police presence but for all the doom laden talk of pickpockets and crime it was pretty safe if you are sensible. If you take the subway to Pajaritos station there is an excellent bus service to Vina del Mar and Valparaiso and you can easily do your own trips. Similarly you can use the subway to Pajaritos and pick up an airport bus from there. Coming from Argentina I found people a little less friendly but very efficient. Santiago isn't super cheap but it's got some nice buildings and trendy areas. Avoid the terminal du Sur bus station area and the market area if you can. They look pretty sketchy. That said I got a coach from Mendoza into Terminal de Sur and there was security there and a taxi rank inside it near the bus platforms so it's easy enough to depart. Please take this review on advisement as I barely had time to scratch the surface of Santiago let alone Chile.

Great location in the heart of Lastarria - there are great restaurants & bars literally 50m away like Chipe Libre and Bocanariz (best wine bar in Santiago). Friendly staff and good view from the rooftop. Go for a drink at the Singular hotel bar next door for a stunning view. Very nice breakfast.
