Caribbean History, Color & Soul

Colourful and historic, modern and colonial, local and touristic, Cartagena de Indias represents one of the liveliest Colombian beach resorts. Its character mixes cultures and peoples, including natives, Spanish, African and Arab. Its rich legacy granted its Old Town the recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When the Spanish founded the city in 1533, the region had already been inhabited for thousands of years. It became an important port for the Spanish gold and a significant political centre. Echoes of those times can be seen throughout the historic centre, in the city walls, the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, and the colourful streets and colonial squares. Some of the best hotels in Cartagena de Indias can be found here.

Proudly Caribbean, Cartagena’s soul gives the rhythm to the streets, and the music coming out of cafés and restaurants is nothing but a physical manifestation of its collective spirit. Follow the beat, get to the seaside, and have one of your best holidays. Hotels near Cartagena de Indias’ beaches will be the perfect stage.

You can reach the city flying from Bogotá El Dorado International Airport to Rafael Nuñez Airport. Don’t miss this remarkable piece of Colombia, Booking.com offers you the best hotel deals in Cartagena de Indias.

I loved the vibe and just being able to walk around in the evening enjoying the old walled city and the Getsemaní neighborhood, and being able to carry an alcoholic beverage all through those areas, drinking a beer as I explored and enjoyed the places and the people, was totally great. Beautiful buildings and sunsets. Good street food across the street from the clock tower, just outside the old walled city. Fun chiva bus night tour. Rented a beach bike and explored the Bocagrande and old walled city neighborhoods and the AC in their fancy malls for five hours one sweltering afternoon - all afternoons are sweltering from about 1-4 PM, so plan to be in an air conditioned place or in the swimming pool or Caribbean Sea waters during that time frame.

I was most impressed with the beauty of Centro.

I was most impressed with the beauty of Centro. However, because I came in late May, it was very hot and humid. I could only go out for an hour at a time. I would come back to my hotel drenched and tired! It would have been better if I had come in the dry season (January to April).

The old town of Cartagena is a beautiful, walled city, oozing with character and characters. It's hot and humid, but the evening breeze takes the edge off. And Rosario Islands being so close, you can have so many adventures here.

Photos of the city show beautiful buildings and churches and views but the reality is quite different. The narrow streets are full of noisy motor bikes and scooters and the people who use them have no consideration for pedestrians and other users. They ignore traffic lights and it is quite dangerous to cross the roads. Then if you walk along the walls which are quite safe then look over the edge you will see loads of rubbish dumped and also in the sea. There are litter bins but they are mostly empty. It is a shame because it is quite an attractive city, or would be without the rubbish and the noise. But there are some good points. If you walk around the Parque del Centenario, which is free, you will see Sloths in the trees just above you and also monkeys. You can visit the Islas del Rosario by speedboat on a usual bumpy ride which takes about an hour. It’s not cheap and unfortunately most of the beaches have been grabbed by private owners and hotels. There are some public beaches but they are difficult to access and the footpaths have very few signs, so its easy to lose your way, even though it is a small island.

Getsemani is a great area to explore and the castle is quite interesting, but best hire a guide to understand its history. It's a shame the central park by Getsemani has been 'modernised', it seems to have displaced most of the animals that you used to be able to see there

The location is excellent—on a quiet street in the old city, yet close to everything. Our welcome felt a little rushed, but aside from that, all our interactions with the hotel staff were very positive. The breakfast staff, in particular, were wonderful and did their best to make everyone comfortable despite some challenges in the kitchen that day. Our room (a suite for three) was spacious and had all the basics, although there were no tea or coffee-making facilities. The patio was a nice feature and offered a good level of privacy.
