The landscaping is lush and lovely. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The A/C and hot water/water pressure worked well. Breakfast was a highlight (very good). Staff was friendly when approached, though service was not proactive.

Alanna and her Uncle were our hosts. They were super attentive to our needs, even if we didn't ask for something, they would offer it. We were given fresh coconut and coconut water most mornings, when sitting in the patio kitchen area, she brought a fan to keep us cool. She set up a hammock on our patio area for my husband. The location was in town, but not where it was loud. The closest beach, Playa Negra was beautiful and hardly used, it felt like it was personally ours. A vast selection of excellent restaurants, shops and groceries are within walking distance. We never needed a car or taxi. Bicycles are easily rented if you want to venture outside of the town. We even found a cute, friendly little Baptist church for Sunday's worship.

Very busy small town with lots of restaurants, bars, shopping. Public bus goes up and down the main road between Cahuita National Park and Refugio Nacional Gandoca-Manzanillo, where there are sprawling preserves with beaches & wetlands, protecting a vast coral reef & mangrove oyster beds.

The town was nice and classic costa rica but neat small/beachy shops and restaurants. (Close to Cocles. Don't skip that area or Manzanillo beaches!! Very pretty around there, even the drive). My favorite along the roads (above others for 6 hours)! The Indian place near cocles? was pricey but good. Liked Hotel Banana Azul and Hotel Indalo too. Intimate, smaller, cheaper, classy hotel. Beaches were nice! The beach at Cahuita was super cool/unusual. We walked toward the right for almost an hour and found it to be interesting/ unusual.

It rains a lot... it was december, I don't know if it is always like that. Punta Uva beach and Cocles Beach are better places to stay. Puerto Viejo is crowdy, at night people often try to sell drugs. Prices are very high for food. I prefer the pacific coast of Costa Rica.

Nice town, loved the Caribbean influence.
Nice town, loved the Caribbean influence. Road works were taking place at a bridge as you enter the town, so traffic was always very congested at that spot. Hopefully that is just temporary. Loved the national parks, the Jaguar Rescue Center, cacao tour, variety of food. Everyone was super friendly.

Puerto Viejo is a laid back beach town that is walkable and has charming streets lined with many food options and shops. The town has a reliable transportation system and is conveniently located near Punta Uva, one of the area’s most beautiful beaches.

One of our favorite places was the Jaguar Resource Center- definitely worth a visit. Tours take place twice a day-9:30 and 11:30. You can book in advance on-line, or show up early. I also recommend Cahuita National Park although you need a private vehicle, or can take a tuk-tuk. If you want to see wildlife, hire a guide at the entrance, otherwise provide a suggested donation. Not all beaches are great for swimming... check water conditions daily.

The host and his family were very kind genuine people. We were early checking in and they were kind enough to keep our suitcases for us! The hotel was situated on the main street of Puerto Viejo easy to get around and close to everything. The room was clean the beds were comfy! We felt safe there as the host and his family were very attentive . There is an excellent bakery called : De Gustibus (note they are closed on wednesdays) right across from them for fresh pastries and coffee in the morning ! Would recommend for short stays !
We booked while on the bus on our way to Puerto Viejo as it was recommended to us by a guide on a tour we had just been on. As it was a late booking, I don't think we got one of the best rooms. It was ok though and the location was good and the staff friendly enough. In the end we stayed for one night and found another hotel with a pool for the rest of our stay, but Cabinas Jacaranda was fine for somewhere to stay.
Banana Azul is a true paradise on the caribbean side of Costa Rica. Where it actually matters, this hotel is doing it right. The AC in rooms is perfect, AND there is a ceiling fan too. The wifi coverage was perfect even out on the beach! The staff were simply amazing. And saving the best for last: THE BEACH!!! It was truly spectacular and the water was so so warm and calm.
The staff were incredibly welcoming and very helpful with any questions or recommendations about the area. The hotel and gardens were beautiful! Perfect location in Puerto Viejo centre and an easy walk to a number of lovely beaches and restaurants.
Rooms were gorgeous, beautifully decorated. Hotel is a few minutes drive from Puerto Viejo itself but that feels like a good thing and it was very easy to get taxis back and forth
