An exceptional boutique hotel. One of the best I’ve stayed in. We had the pleasure of staying in the “Prestige Suite” and we were blown away by the decor in the room. We easily spent the first 30 minutes just exploring every inch of the room, as it was an interior designers dream! However, the best part had to have been the customer service. It was phenomenal and the front desk was extremely welcoming. They made sure we were enjoying ourselves and were available for any questions we may have had. I’m sad I can’t remember their names, but all of them deserve praise and recognition! Additionally, my husband left his shirt in the room and we received an email from Isabell stating that they would ship us the forgotten shirt! Excellent customer service even after we left! If in Heidelberg, we will stay here again without hesitation.

Heidelberg FAQs: Tips for every trip

Fit For a King

Picture perfect Heidelberg is guarded by its famous castle halfway up a hill. If you don’t feel like walking, a funicular train goes there and continues to Königstuhl Mountain whose views are fit for the king it is named after. Dating to the 13th century, the ruined castle has peaceful landscaped grounds to wander, and the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s biggest wine barrel. And big it is!

At the foot of the hill is cobbled Hauptstrasse, supposedly Germany’s longest pedestrian shopping street selling traditional German beer mugs amongst other things. Also here are sidewalk cafes, the odd bierkeller and several Heidelberg hotels.

A short walk west is the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), towering above the Baroque old town. Its square is the site of the Heidelberg Christmas markets, while to the north the beautiful Old Bridge crosses the Neckar River and ends at a twin-towered city gate.

Further west is Heidelberg University, the oldest in Germany and with a national reputation to rival Cambridge, its sister city. Over the river, Neckarwiese is a riverside park popular with students for a barbecue and beer, while by night the city’s many bars stay open until the early hours (and beyond!).

The nearest airports – Frankfurt and Stuttgart – both offer quick access by train to the Heidelberg accommodations on Booking.com

Cute and very walkable.

Cute and very walkable. The castle is really just okay but it's a chill and cultural city that's perfect for a day or two. Don't expect high quality shopping, the stores are basic, mostly souvenirs and chains. Food is also just okay. BUT it's just charming and German in the best way.

I'd been to Heidelberg a few times many years ago and I remembered it as one of my all time favourite cities in Germany. It is just mesmerising. There's an absolute abundance of beauty, history and independently owned bars, restaurants, cafes, all of which with an incredible decor and delicious offerings. This is truly a place to discover, to relax, to indulge, to enjoy. It's very obvious the locals know how to live life well.

This was my first visit, and I was pleasantly surprised by the city's excellent transportation network and ease of getting the right ticket from the high-tech ticket machines found at practically every stop. But this is something one finds in most German cities of comparable size. As a tourist destination, Heidelberg's appeal is limited. The old town is picturesque but very small, the long and distinguished history of its university isn't easily discernible, and most of the centrally-located restaurants are vastly overpriced. Though disparaged as Heidelberg's 'less pretty sister', nearby Mannheim is far more vibrant and intriguing.

The central location was wonderful, allowing my 5-year-old daughter and me to do everything on foot. We enjoyed the Christmas markets and the castle. The hotel is one of the oldest in the city, and its external and internal architectural structure is splendid. The breakfast was excellent. Marc, the staff member who welcomed us, deserves special praise—10 out of 10. Extremely polite. We will definitely return to Heidelberg and to the hotel.

The Krokodil is a family run hotel in a quiet family district halfway between Heidelberg Hbf (15min walk) and Altstadt (Bismarkplatz end). Given good directions and tips by the lovely Magdalena at reception. The breakfast was simple and delicious. The hotel is accessed round the corner from the restaurant and you need to press the buzzer for the heavy door to open. Reception is up the stairs on the first floor.

I stayed one night to the single bedroom and it was really nice! It was bigger than I expected, clean and they provided shower gels/shampoo, something that is not the case in many hotels in Germany. The location was ok for me, close both to the train station and the Altstadt. It was very quiet and comfortable. I really liked it, I would recommend it!
