Guayaquil is a beautiful place, but the Zamborondón area and its surroundings are even more beautiful. I recommend visiting the Zamborondón area. You feel safer visiting the beaches. Villamil is also beautiful and safe; the military is always on duty. In Playa Villamil there's a mall across the street, there are restaurants, and the beach feels very safe. The little restaurants there have very friendly staff and delicious fried curtains. I 100% recommend that area of Playa Villamil.

Guayaquil was just a stop over for a connecting flight.

Guayaquil was just a stop over for a connecting flight. We went to the riverside promenade in the City Centre and went on the cable car; it was a safe area as the promenade is secured with high gates and armed police all the way along.

If you are able to tell them beforehand at what time you will arrive, I think they would have a reception open for you. They kept asking me when I would arrive. But the long-distance bus services in Ecuador don't seem to know the times of their own operation. I was told that a bus would leave at 9:05 in the morning. It turned out on the day that there was one at 4:30 in the morning and one at 10 am. I'm deaf, so I can't phone the hotel, and I can't email them if the bus company doesn't know the times until they take off. It would have been very much better if the hotel's claim about reception always being open was not a lie.

We ended up missing a flight to the Galapagos and had to stay two days/two nights in Guayaquil. We thought there wouldn't be much to do there (from previous experience) and were a bit hesitant with two small children in tow. However, it was fine. We booked a hotel with a roof top pool, walked along the malecon, visited the parque de las iguanas where the kids loved seeing the huge iguanas roaming around, did the open-air tourist bus through the city and wanted to do the cable car but unfortunately most things are cash only in Guayaquil (we didn't realise coming from a city where card is taken everywhere) so didn't get to. It's not the most exciting city ever but if you end up spending a couple of days there, you will find things to do for sure.

The park of the Iguanas was a major hit with the kids.

The park of the Iguanas was a major hit with the kids. The free museum of past Guayaquil too. The Zoo in Guayaquil was amazing with African and Asian animals but the Capybara was what we all wanted to see. Malecon 2000 was beautiful with a boat ride in the river was GREAT. The Cathedral was beautiful. The Historical Park is a MUST see; was my first time and i loved it.

Guayaquil as most of Ecuador is full of crime.

Guayaquil as most of Ecuador is full of crime. The hotel where I was staying was one block away from city government building and it was still not a safe place. There is a light house which is a tourist attraction and you can not go visit because your car will be stopped and you will be robbed. So the government knows about it and does nothing.

Great Hotel, exactly what we expected from Holiday Inn (modern, clean, western standard). The best thing is its located right next to the airport so perfect for a one night stop over on the way to the Galapagos. They have a free shuttle to the airport which you can arrange with the hotel in advance (you can also walk it in 5-10 mins). Due to the security situation in Guayaquil (Australia Govt. rates it as 2nd highest risk so our travel insurance was not valid), we preferred to stay as close to airport as possible. This hotel felt very safe.

We needed a hotel near the airport but not at airport hotel prices. This was a cheap taxi ride away from the airport. There are some restaurants a short walk away. The room was big. The shower was nice and hot with good water pressure. AC was good. The bed was very comfy with good sheets. The breakfast was okay. I would stay here again.

It is clean, not expensive and the shower is good too, with warm water to shower. That is uncommon in Guayaquil. Staff is friendly. If you're staying for some days in Guayaquil, I would recommend this hotel. The location is great too, close to the museo municipal de Guayaquil, Malecon, cathedral and parque de las iguanas.

The hotel is close to the airport and cost $4 dollars in an uber to get there. It was a nice hotel with clean rooms. Their provide shampoo, conditioner and soap and the room had air con and a hair dryer. The hotel is on the river so you can see some cool wildlife in the trees there.

Nice hostel in a safe area of Guayaquil. Spoke to numerous restaurant owners who all agreed the area was very safe. Common areas are large and relaxed. There was also only two people staying in the eight bed dorm I booked so it was a very relaxed stay.
