Try to find bars/restaurants away from attractions and do not consider eateries advertising menu with pictures and in English. Learn a few basic Spanish phrases. Locals appreciate your efforts. Madrid is a beautiful European city with many (rightly) famous museums and shopping options. We really enjoyed walking around and finding unique or uniquely-designed stores (the international brand stores on Gran Via are worth stepping into), bars (Salmon Guru is a must-visit) and restaurants (for example, Motteau is a spectacular pastry shop). We also found the zoo to be worthwhile despite the high cost for its size. Two days are enough to explore the main attractions.

Of the European destinations I have visited over the past...
Of the European destinations I have visited over the past few years, Madrid has to be one of the most impressive as far as shopping options are concerned. This is especially true of the area around Calle de Goya, with its vast array of shops of all sizes. Shops offer decent deals on product categories such as luggage and perfumes.
Food options are plentiful though I tend to find Spanish food lacks variety compared to Italy or even France for example. The Veneta gelato shops are a definite must-try, with their unique flavours.
Visitors should consider the subway for convenient travel as well as guided tuk-tuk tours departing from Plaza Mayor to get an idea of places they wish to visit later. The Royal Botanic Gardens are amongst the most exquisite botanic gardens I have seen in my life, with an incredible collection of bonsai and dahlias. Parque de El Rétiro is another highlight.
Looking at the downsides, food does tend to be more expensive than in Portugal (or, again, Italy). The weather can get unpleasantly hot: we came during the final week of September to beat the torrid summer yet were still treated to temperatures of 34-35 degrees on successive days.
In my view, a city best visited in spring or autumn.

The site seeing was good and within walking distance once you reached the palace area, plenty of shops and restaurants that were interesting. Its a very busy city full of tourists and hard to see local non tourist venues in the city centre so you get a tourist view of Spain / life in Madrid. It is very very busy and people join lines to go into restaurants. We got some good food and some v poor and expensive food, its hard to know what quality of food you may actually get after you order. We found the restaurants generally very geared towards get them in get them out. Not the care and attention that you would get in Ireland or Italy with respect to food. The weather was excellant for eating out and maby we were unlucky with some of our choices, but we did get to two good restaurants where the food was nice.

Truly a royal city.
Truly a royal city. Beautiful architecture, well maintained and very clean. Broad avenues with LOTS of trees everywhere and several large parks in the city centre. Probably the greenest city in Europe. We loved walking in the Retiro park. The city is huge and taking the hop on - hop off bus on the first day really helped us get an overview so that we knew what to explore later. The public transport works well and makes it easy to get around Madrid. We visited the Prado museum and saw its impressive collection of paintings, Goya and Velasquez in particular. Sorry our stay was to short to visit more. As expected, there were lots of tapas bars and restaurants everywhere in the city centre.

The room (Gran Via) was pleasant although a little small, which is only to be expected in a classic building city centre location. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The location is ideal for sightseeing with all of the highlights in short walking distance and very close to Metro station. The restaurant serves only breakfast with a good selection and never too busy. The lounge area and bar is comfortable. There are many dining options close to the hotel.

Convenient location as close by to the airport if you’re looking for a short stay. There’s bus stops close by to commute to city centre. It is however in a remote location but there is a shop a minutes walk away, no other shops in vicinity. The staff were friendly, the hotel is clean, good facilities, a modern hotel.
