Tata restaurant was exceptional, all staff lovely, location and main facilities excellent but room a little poor, side tables too small and bed a bit hard, not great for 3 people, seemed quite expensive considering room was basic. No extra pillow when 3 adults, and they were too soft and only 3 towels, no hand towels.

Founded by the Phocaeans in 600 B.C., the long history of Marseille has produced an interesting and dynamic port-side city bursting with cultural diversity. The le Cours Julien and la Plaine areas provide a trendy hangout and every Thursday and Saturday morning the Plaine market offers its various wares. This is the area to buy a novel from a hip bookshop or watch your kids in one of the playgrounds.
There are also plentiful cafes to sip a cappuccino and watch the world go by.
If a culture packed vacation is on the agenda, the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne, Notre Dame de la Garde and Palais Longchamp won’t disappoint. The unique Unité d'Habitation, designed by famous architect Le Corbusier, contains everything from a shopping street to housing and has spectacular views of the terracotta landscape that makes Marseille so distinctive.

Marseille is a big city and not a place for vacation.
Marseille is a big city and not a place for vacation. We used a lovely villa in the hills overlooking Marseille as a rest and good base to explore other interesting places nearby, such as Cassis.
The Villa Blanche was lovely but you really need a car to be able to explore the surrounding areas.
The Villa Blanche hosts prepared each day lovely breakfast. Since there were no restaurants in the area we usually had a late lunch in one of our excursion towns. Uber eats also delivers there. There is also a lovely infinity pool in their very lush garden.

I was told that Marseille was a bit "gritty".
I was told that Marseille was a bit "gritty". I didn't think that this city was any worse than most other European cities that we visited. We felt safe, even at night, but stayed close to highly populated areas. The Vieux Port area was a bit over-crowded, especially on the weekend.

Eating around the port was lovely, great choices.
Eating around the port was lovely, great choices. A 3 course meal for 26 euro in a lot of places around the square. Nice ambience and felt safe. The metro was very easy to use, we went to the Orange Velodrome and back on it. We visited one of the closest beaches and had drinks on a rooftop bar. The bus tour could be longer. The mini one for 10 euro was perfect. Some bars are expensive so it's worth shopping around.

I felt like I just scratched the surface of Marseille in 2 1/2 days and two nights, I would have enjoyed more time! Getting around the city was very convenient between mass transit and bike share and walking. Good food everywhere and always interesting things to see and do. The urban beach experience is wonderful, and planning to reserve a day for an outing to Les Calanques is well worth it. Be prepared to clamber in and out of the water at the rocky beaches. Good sports sandals recommended!

What a beautiful city, we loved our time in Marseille and are already planning on coming back. The transport is great - the metro and buses make it easy to get around the city. The boat trips from the main port were excellent and the city's museums were fantastic.
Dining out is reasonable too, we ate well and didn't feel we overpaid for the meals we had. It's a great city to explore the south of France from as the transport links are very good from the main train station.
Loved it and want to go back.

The history and the presentation of it in multiple museums is fascinating and very well done. We especialy enjoyed the ambience and cafes in the old town area. In the same place youll find the remarkably good archeology museum set in the old 'charity' building

Residhome Marseille was a great hotel to stay for the 3 nights in Marseille. It's newly renovated, clean, good location and the staff were very kind and helpful. Nicole was especially warm and caring. We were pleasantly surprised with a basket filled with goodies and a bottle of champagne as they knew we were celebrating our wedding anniversary that weekend. Thank you Residhome for a great stay and experience in France.
The location is great- 10 mins walk down to the Vieux Port, a bit more uphill on the way back. Quiet enough in busy Marseille. Room was great- bed v comfy and peaceful. The balcony was good too but overlooked a lantern light to the offices below which was *a bit odd* when a large meeting took place one morning involving clapping at regular intervals but more amusing than a problem.
Location is very good , the hotel very close to Marseilles Saint Charles train station , around 5-8 minutes to walk , easy to get train to visit towns ouside Marseilles. My apartment has small kitchen so it was convenient for me to cook by myself , there are all necessary kitchen utilities for cooking. The hotel is in within walking distance to city centre and old port - 1 km
The view over the Vieux Port of Marseille and Notre Dame de la Garde is impressive from the room, which was very comfortable. The next best thing is the location, walkable from the train station, bus stops right in front, metro just around the corner. Very friendly reception desk.
