University Arms, Autograph Collection

Hotel in Cambridge City Centre, Cambridge

University Arms, Cambridge, offers 192 rooms and suites, with views over Parker’s Piece, historic Regent Street, and the hotel’s inner courtyard.

The University Arms was a beautiful building, but the more recent addition to its frontage has drastically reduced its beauty. One of the pleasures of staying there was dining and breakfasting in the beautiful High ceilinged dining room with windows down to the floor, but that is now converted to "function rooms" snd diners are accommodated in the earlier (? 1920s) extension. The staff were excellent. The "comfort room" we had seemed like a former laundry store with doubtful electrical wiring. If the light was turned off in the bathroom, the lights in the bedroom flickered on and off, regardless of the bedroom lightswitch position. Remembering how it was only 30 years ago, it was hard not to be a bit disapointed.

FAQs about hotels in Cambridge

The Inspiration for Genius

Open-plan and open-minded, Cambridge is best known for university colleges dating to the 13th century. King’s College is the most popular, and its chapel choir is internationally famous. Although accessed from cobbled King’s Parade, it is best viewed from a punt on The Backs, the part of the River Cam behind.

Cambridge punting is an institution and gives great views of Queen’s College Mathematical Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs at St John’s College. Upstream is Jesus Green, site of an outdoor pool and a fantastic beer festival. Next to this is Midsummer Common, a park home to the annual Strawberry Fair (and the occasional cow). Opposite are the college boathouses - get up early to see the rowers in action!

Cows also roam the Mill Pond meadow, where the river leads south to Grantchester, a quaint village with a lovely cafe. Places to eat in Cambridge include riverside restaurants and typical English pubs like The Eagle, drinking hole of DNA founders Watson & Crick.

Cambridge shopping options include a daily market (in Market Square), the Grafton Centre and the exclusive Grand Arcade, the latest addition. The Scott Polar Museum and free Fitzwilliam Museum are 2 of many fantastic Cambridge museums.

Stansted Airport is connected by train to the city’s accommodation choices on Booking.com.

Cambridge is a very walkable city which is really great. I did the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour which was a great way to see almost everything. I highly recommend it, even if you only have a couple of hours to spare.

Cyclists spoilt it for me. Even our guide said they were ‘lawless’ hardly any pedestrianized streets which is madness with so many tourists groups being shown around. Not just cyclists but electric bikes ans motorbikes, a real hazard in my opinion

We didn’t see a whole lot of the tourist bits but I have been before and I thoroughly recommend punting along the river . The taxi service is excellent and very reasonably priced especially to and from station hill . We had bottomless brunch at Scott’s . Great food and very attentive , happy staff .

Go to the new Holiday Inn in Cambourne - super new and great air conditioning. Most of our wedding party were staying there and we spent lunch time in the 33 degrees heat there. It was a fabulous experience and the contrast with the Ramada was glarring - what a dump of a hotel it is. One redeeming feature - the night manager had the subtilty to hold the company line and showed enough empathy to what we experienced - to give him priase...he is a credit to any company and it is a shame he has to fend off lots and lots of issues....

My Wife and Myself are so over the Moon with this property we just have fallen for the Charm and Location of where this hotel is next to Restaurants and supermarkets. I don't know about parking as we do not drive but next to the property is a quiet side road has parking down there if that helps anyone with a car. Walking distance is about 5 minutes to the center of Cambridge. don't over look this little gem even though it's Cheaper than some it's worth a try. Staff are more than helpful.

Our room was clean & comfortable. The hotel was close to Cambridge city centre & it was easy for us to walk down the road & catch the bus. We walked to the pub in the evening & it was all signposted from Rectory Farm, which was great - especially as it was dark when we went back
