FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Plenty of shops to visit. We only had two days so would have loved longer to sightsee. Plenty of good eating places without having to walk too far. Everyone we spoke to were very pleasant and helpful.

We were in Chester for an English Heritage guided walk around Roman Chester which so interesting. We unfortunately had to leave straight after the tour finishes but will need to return to see more of history. We noticed how clean Chester is, absolutely no litter, lots of independent shops and great restaurants and bars.

Very interesting and lively city with lots of historic buildings. Mostly pedestrianised so easy to wander about safely. Some lovely sculptures around the city centre and the Cathedral in city centre is amazing.

Lots of shops. Cathedral was dog friendly as was Chester Market. Liked vibe here. Hole in the wand allowed dog to sit inside while we played and then swapped. Did Wall walk too. Liked Eastgate shopping decor.

Plenty of shops , restaurants and cafes and pubs Disappointing that new shopping arcades and centre has been built but no public toilets available Ridiculous oversight or just bad planning and cost cutting?

What a fabulous city to discover.

What a fabulous city to discover. Old world charm with Tudor styled buildings and a unique shopping area called The Rows. Everywhere you turn there is something fabulous. Can't stop talking about it. Cathedral is stunning inside (£5 donation) and well worth a look inside. Wanted to play mini golf, but left early. Lots of placed to eat (recommend the Botanical) great food. The walk along the wall and river is great for meandering and enjoying the view. You'll see the remnants of the castle too.

Clean, modern and welcoming. Room had radio, small fridge with fresh milk and water in it and nespresso coffee machine as well as normal kettle with tea/coffee. Bathroom was lovely and good shower. Friendly staff. Delicious breakfast made to order. Free car parking and chester city centre only 10 minute easy walk. Booked the hotel as we had a special offer on the room but would come back here again and again to stay full price.

The room was comfortable and peaceful. The bathroom was massive! There were some good breakfast options. I found it handy to have car parking on site, and the proximity of the main road made it easy to get to Great Barrow during the day. It was also easy to get from the hotel to Chester Station and City Centre.
