FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Beautiful historic city without the crowds of places like Bath. I'd forgotten how much I liked it having visited many years ago. Visit the Cathedral, walk the city walls, linger by the river and enjoy the many shops and restaurants. We were there for the Midsummer parade which was great to experience.

Loved the canal walks and also the City Walls. The River Dee on other side of town was also beautiful with great walking either bank. Good choice of restaurants in and on the outskirts of town. Easily walkable town and good bus and train connections so car not needed.

Chester is an interesting and friendly place.

Chester is an interesting and friendly place. Everyone we met was helpful. It is not a large old town so it wasn’t difficult to get around. It is also within easy reach of North Wales and some beautiful countryside. I wish we had spent more time in Wales and a bit less in the town. Lady Chester Country Park was a lovey place to walk and picnic and the river is also beautiful. The information centre and organised tours are helpful. However planning ahead is not helped by the information centre website not advertising their opening times and when you ring the phone number out of hours you are told that due to Covid staff are working from home!!

Chester is a most interesting city.

Chester is a most interesting city. Steeped in history and caters well for all tastes. You will need to take time to get the best experience. Good hotels and B&B's further out. Vibrant but not noisey. Nice small cafes and ancient hostelries. Huge Cathedral. Race course and world class zoo outside of city. Bus services.

Clean, modern and welcoming. Room had radio, small fridge with fresh milk and water in it and nespresso coffee machine as well as normal kettle with tea/coffee. Bathroom was lovely and good shower. Friendly staff. Delicious breakfast made to order. Free car parking and chester city centre only 10 minute easy walk. Booked the hotel as we had a special offer on the room but would come back here again and again to stay full price.
