Colchester is a very vibrant city, with plenty of bars & restaurants. The castle & gardens are well worth a visit. Finding & visiting the remaining roman walls & Chariot Racing Circus is very interesting. There is a Wetherspoons for people on a lower budget. Bus service is excellent with lots of sleepy villages nearby. Good walking areas.

A vg city for shopping and coffee bars.

A vg city for shopping and coffee bars. History abounds through every pore. But some downtrodden parts in centre and closed down shots show the sadw decline of the high street in the UK. Publiic transport on weekends and bank holidays is limited in the centre. There are many great historical sites to see and Castle Park is a green oasis which is well worth visiting for relaxation. Driving in Colchestrer is a nightmare due to the many roundabouts, speeding bad=tempered traffic and totally inadequate signposting!

Great place to visit if you like antiquities and history.

Great place to visit if you like antiquities and history. Only issue was that our friends had a dog and we couldn't approach the park with the castle, so we had to go in pairs. I am not a dog owner but I understand the issues around it. I don't know if the city of Colchester can find a solution to this. The surrounding villages and towns were very picturesque. We also visited Felixstowe, with a very good restaurant called the Cafe Bencotto (https://www.cafebencotto.co.uk/) which was very good!

The receptionist when we arrived was extremely friendly & polite and very interested in what we were there to do. Jessica in the morning breakfast room was extremely cheery and chatty. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The bed was very comfy and it was a great shower. Plenty of tea/coffee and biscuits in the room too. Parking easy and pretty close to the centre of Colchester. The entire hotel was warm and cozy in fact our room was a little too warm even though there was no heating on anywhere.

Relatively cheap, shops and food around, in Colchester. It’s basically student en-suite flats being let out to visitors, which is fine as long as you understand this isn’t hotel standard. Breakfast was fine, a basic cooked one at the canteen 5 min walk away.
