Used to live in Colchester and the town is now a city - but central Colchester has benefitted. Great range of eateries and bars if you need those, but it’s the museums and galleries I enjoy. The Roman Circus museum and site are fascinating, and the castle museum itself is excellent. The Monotoes and First Site galleries/exhibition spaces are great. Lovely park and riverside walks, plus churches and town walks to explore Colchester’s long history. From Colchester you can easily make outings either by rail, bus or car.

For someone who is adventurous and always looking to gain more experience of places through travel, Colchester is indeed an Iconic Ancient and historic city. The cost of living is very high compared to Barking and Dagenham, where I often visit, and Sittingbourne, where I reside. It is easy to get around town. We ate at a Nando's and had the opportunity to shop at an Aldi outlet; Wendy's, McDonald's, etc. There are actually several attractions in Colchester, like the castle, the Zoo, and parks. The people are friendly. We had the opportunity of visiting the Reformed Church at Lion's Walk in town.

Lovely historical town with many historical things to see.

Lovely historical town with many historical things to see. Tiptree Jam Museum close by, approx 25 mins away. Trinity shopping area so charming with lovely coffee shops and cute restaurants. There's a midweek car boot sale on Wednesdays near the Delta hotel (Marks Tey) which starts at 6am and runs till 12pm midday. For those who need it, there is halal Pepe's and subway around 15 mins away from Marks Tey.

Although we already live in Colchester, we decided to book a local hotel for our wedding so that we could relax and make the most of the celebrations without worrying about travelling home afterwards. It was the perfect choice and reminded us how much the town has to offer. What were your favourite places there? One of our favourite places is Colchester Castle and the beautiful Castle Park, which is ideal for a leisurely walk or a picnic. We also love exploring the historic city centre, with its independent shops, cafés, and charming streets. If you have time, a visit to nearby Mersea Island is well worth the trip for its coastal scenery. Where did you eat? Colchester has a fantastic variety of restaurants. For our wedding celebrations, we enjoyed dining locally and were spoilt for choice, from cosy pubs to stylish restaurants. The town centre offers everything from Italian and Asian cuisine to traditional British food, so there's something to suit every taste. Is it easy to get around Colchester? Yes, Colchester is very easy to get around. The town centre is compact and walkable, and there are plenty of buses if you want to travel further afield. Taxis are readily available, and for those arriving by train, the main stations provide good connections. If you're driving, there are several convenient car parks around the town. What are some great activities for young couples like you? For couples, I'd recommend exploring Castle Park together, enjoying a meal at one of the many independent restaurants, or visiting Colchester Zoo, which makes for a fun day out. If you enjoy history, Colchester Castle is a must-see, while nearby Mersea Island offers a lovely escape for a seaside walk and fresh seafood. In the evening, there are plenty of bars and live music venues to enjoy, making Colchester a great destination for a romantic weekend or special occasion.

We enjoyed being in Colchester because it was the Town in which I was born and grew up in. My wife and I lived in Colchester for about 30 years before we moved to the east Midlands. So we were happy to go back, see old friends and visit the castle and the castle Park. Colchester has quite a lot to offer those who travel there.

Colchester is a very vibrant city, with plenty of bars & restaurants. The castle & gardens are well worth a visit. Finding & visiting the remaining roman walls & Chariot Racing Circus is very interesting. There is a Wetherspoons for people on a lower budget. Bus service is excellent with lots of sleepy villages nearby. Good walking areas.

For such an amazing building, we thought the general appearance on entering the hotel was shabby and unclean. The bedroom was basic and shabby, which gave a feeling of unease. The breakfast was overcooked and unpleasant. However the staff were extremely friendly . We understand the hotel was refurbished some years ago, perhaps it is time for more attention. Such a shame for one of the oldest buildings in Colchester .

This was our second stay at Greyfriars, in itself an endorsement. The hotel has high standards in service, decor, cleanlness and comfort. (Breakfasts are good.) Its location is also good - easy to access by car and virually in the centre of Colchester. If we visit Colchester again, we shall certainly stay rhere.

The location was the real selling point and the rates were reasonable. There was parking behind the George Hotel at £9.50 for 24hrs which was a good rate. The place was clean and comfortable. If you're looking for a base camp to come back to and you want to be in Central Colchester it's great.
