The rooms was beautiful and we had a lovey surprise when we entered the room for our anniversary. The staff were very friendly and it was a lovely day so we were able to sit outside in the gardens for a drink or two. The decor was very tasteful and we had a sneak peak in the wedding reception area which was stunning. Overall we will be returning and can’t wait till we do. Thank you to all staff.

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Cathedral out of this world but disappointed that it was ticket only to go into the castle but the reason understandable as it is student accommodation. City itself was beautiful. Cafe in the market hall excellent value for money.

The cathedral and castle are worth the visit.
Please note to view the castle you need to book since it's use for student residency.
We were lucky the open market was open.
A serious option for my kids to choose Durham University.

Tour of the cathedral with very knowledgeable guide is highly recommended. And climbing the 326 steps of the tower for fantastic views.
The castle visit is a must.
And we were very lucky to see Shakespeare's first Folio on display which was quite special for me.
Nice meal at the Boat Club overlooking the river.

Lovely city, bit of old and new, plenty of shops, traditional pubs and bars, great selection of restaurants to choose from.
Wish we had stopped longer to explore the cathedral and river walk, our main purpose was to visit nearby beamish museum (20min easy drive away).

An ancient town (ie city) with beautiful monuments - the Castle and Cathedral. It is very easy to get about although there are some hilly streets too, Rail access is excellent and the station fairly central.
The River Wear winds through the area and there are some beautiful riverside walks with great views of the old centre. It is also a good touring base.

The city centre is very compact so it is possible to walk everywhere. The cathedral is stunning and well worth visiting. We also visited the Oriental Museum, a spur of the moment decision, and was blown away at the quality of the exhibits and the way they were displayed.

Our host was attentive and thoughtful, the house was clean and very comfy with great heating and lots of hot water - very easy to park outside and just 10 mins to Durham. Great value for 4 people and we were easily able to go to Durham for the morning and afternoon, pop back to relax for an hour or so then head back to the city as the apartment was so close to the city centre - bigger than a hotel room would have been for a family of 4 and really quite perfect for us.
Had a fabulous stay at Hotel Indigo. Such a beautiful old hotel with lots of character. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and a good selection. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend to anyone staying in Durham and we will definitely be booking again
Room was spotless, comfortable and the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. This is a city centre location, so you do get some street noise, which personally didn't find a problem. There is secure parking at Prince Bishops just a short walk from the hotel, which is very reasonably priced.
Ideally situated for exploring Durham and the surrounding area being close to and in easy walking distance to the city centre and with free on-site parking. The breakfast was excellent and cooked to order and the staff were friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
