A Host of History
Set around the Exe River, affluent Exeter has played a part in English history from the Roman era to William the Conqueror to the Spanish Armada. Its most impressive structure is the cathedral, begun in the 11th century and boasting the longest stone roof in England.
The surrounding green is a popular picnic spot, and the half-timbered buildings and red-brick façades of the neighbouring High Street house a host of shops. Even more are in the Princesshay and Guildhall shopping centres.
The Guildhall itself is considered England’s oldest municipal building still in use, while nearby Parliament Street is one of the world’s narrowest streets. The remains of 11th-century St Nicholas Priory are now a museum, and there are more red-stone ruins at hilltop Exeter Castle (or Rougemont Castle), built into the Roman walls.
Exeter Central Station is behind the castle, while St Davids Station is nearer the university. The large student population means that the city has good nightlife, and some bars are located by the Quayside, site of Custom House. The river flows past Topsham and Powderham Castle to enter the sea at Exmouth.
To the east are Exeter Airport and the Westpoint Arena exhibition centre, both easily reached from Booking.com’s hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

Not the cheapest in the area on that night but conveniently placed for me. I got a good room. Other guests that have stayed here before told me that rooms in other parts of the complex are different. Staff here work hard to make a good stay

We visited Exeter purely to visit the Royal Albert museum...
We visited Exeter purely to visit the Royal Albert museum and art galley.
It was a really relaxing experience but probably designed to cater for children. However, the atmosphere was lovely, but the lack of 'art' disappointing.
I loved the area where children could create their own art! The staff employed there and throughout the building were excellent and so pleasant.
A big disappointment was the lack of access to the 'Roman section'. We'll return when that's open.

Exeter is quite hilly which I didn't see mentioned in any...
Exeter is quite hilly which I didn't see mentioned in any tourist advertising. I had 2 days to explore, but felt I saw everything i wanted to see in one day, the second day I hopped on the train and went elsewhere before returning home.
Before coming to Exeter I choose it because it was somewhere I had never been, and living less than an hour away by train, I felt like it would be a good place to go.
I'm sad to say it didn't live up to expectations, and being someone with a lower mobility I found it challenging to walk as much as I would normally do because of the hilly nature.
Exeter is probably not somewhere I would visit again.

There are some interesting walks around the city.
There are some interesting walks around the city. On a previous occasion I had explored the underground tunnels. The cathedral is a good visit, though it does cost. A good range of shops to explore too.

I went in July as I had to visit the university then.
I went in July as I had to visit the university then. Two things worth doing in good weather are:
1) Visiting Greenway (National Trust property) - This is worth doing is you are a fan of Agatha Christie, 20th century life/history and countryside beauty.
2) The walking and cycle paths down the Exe estuary to Dawlish. - Very beautiful, with (if cycling) only one (~100ft) hill between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish. Walkers can avoid that hill by using a seaside path.

Exeter was a very pleasant and interesting city.
Exeter was a very pleasant and interesting city. The Cathedral, restaurants, the medieval underground water tunnels and historical buildings were great. The city walls walk was very frustrating. We only found 2 of the supposed 9 tourist signs and it was very poorly signed.
The Ivy restaurant was fantastic. The food and staff were excellent.

The radio playing soft music on arrival was a nice touch, especially late in the day, when it gives a relaxing mood for the arriving guest.
The location is very conveniently located halfway between for Exeter St Davids station and the Exeter town centre, and is very quiet at night. The building itself is a pleasant one too. The single room I stayed in was compact (shower only no bath) but adequate.

The staff are all wonderful, friendly, genuine and welcoming.
The breakfast is the best in town by far - we have tried quite a few.
The hotel itself is gorgeous, each room is individual, very comfy beds!
It's location is excellent for both university and the city centre.

So easy to find off motorway, ideal with parking/park and ride option into city centre on doorstep! Friendly staff, room was spacious, clean and had all facilities needed to make it an enjoyable stay! Perfect for visiting uni student/viewing uni or just exploring Exeter!

Easy parking across the road — pay at the hotel and get a discount.
Rooms are functional with comfy beds, and staff are friendly. Good value overall.
