This is a lovely little hotel, perhaps more a B&B, for visits to Dartmoor. Beautiful location with enormous garden. We felt really at home. Nice little bar with good wine, cozy living room with fireplace and rooms are top. We warmly recommend Weeke Barton.

FAQs about hotels in Exeter

A Host of History

Set around the Exe River, affluent Exeter has played a part in English history from the Roman era to William the Conqueror to the Spanish Armada. Its most impressive structure is the cathedral, begun in the 11th century and boasting the longest stone roof in England.

The surrounding green is a popular picnic spot, and the half-timbered buildings and red-brick façades of the neighbouring High Street house a host of shops. Even more are in the Princesshay and Guildhall shopping centres.

The Guildhall itself is considered England’s oldest municipal building still in use, while nearby Parliament Street is one of the world’s narrowest streets. The remains of 11th-century St Nicholas Priory are now a museum, and there are more red-stone ruins at hilltop Exeter Castle (or Rougemont Castle), built into the Roman walls.

Exeter Central Station is behind the castle, while St Davids Station is nearer the university. The large student population means that the city has good nightlife, and some bars are located by the Quayside, site of Custom House. The river flows past Topsham and Powderham Castle to enter the sea at Exmouth.

To the east are Exeter Airport and the Westpoint Arena exhibition centre, both easily reached from Booking.com’s hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

A great variety of shops.

A great variety of shops. Felt unsafe going out at night due to the street people shouting and under the influence of drink/ drugs. Not enough to do at night other than eating and drinking. The quay area was lovely, would have liked to stroll there at night but was unsure of the safety aspect.

We love Exeter.

We love Exeter. Third visit, as a stop over on our way to the North Devon Coast. Exeter city centre, is a mix of old and new, it's not a huge place, easily covered over a day or two. Buses are frequent and serve most of the surrounding communities. With three train stations, it's very easy to travel to places like The English Riveria (Torquay/Paignton etc) or the North Devon coast. The Cathedral is stunning and has some very nice places to sit outside. The museum is small but full of interesting exhibits and a very tall giraffe. Excellent variety of shops, not so many family friendly cafes/restaurants in the main shopping streets, best to check before you go looking. Found most of the bus drivers were helpful, giving information about the best stops etc, (we got the bus up St Davids Hill with the luggage) Next year, we are booking an extra day in Exeter as we want to explore the Quay and the walks along the riverside.

I thought Exeter was a very enjoyable place to look around. Not far from our hotel. A good choice of restaurants. I was dissapointed that we had to pay £20 between us (couple) to go in the Cathedral. We would have had no problem with a donation so I have put a sad emoji on this site for my to express dissapointment having to pay a princly sum for the Cathedral.

Great time at Exeter Chiefs rugby match, easy to get to by train. Cathedral is fantastic, have been visiting it for over 60 years and the experience/guides are great. Waterfront is great, take a walk down the canal to where it enters estuary, grab a meal at the pub then get the little ferry across the estuary and catch train back to Exeter Central in the heart of the city.

It's really historical, with beautiful old buildings and some lovely old pubs (especially the Ship Inn). The seaside vibe is very noticeable with the seafood options and it's surrounded by beautiful countryside. People are also very friendly. It's one of the loveliest places in the whole country.

Great location in Exeter; a short walk from the town centre and a Vue Cinema within a few feet. The hotel is super clean and airy and the rooms are a good size. The breakfast was superb. The best thing about the hotel is the staff, everyone so happy and enjoying their jobs. Nothing was too much trouble and all staff genuinely enjoyed being at work and supporting others.

A great location to stay in Exeter - 10 mins walk from the city centre but right by the river which is perfect for a morning jog or stroll to the quayside. The rooms were quiet, the bed was very comfortable and the shower was particularly good. The complimentary breakfast was nice. What sets this hotel apart is how polite, friendly and helpful the staff are.
