FAQs about hotels in Lincoln

The Glory of Medieval England

Lincoln was a powerhouse of medieval England and retains amazing monuments from that period. In the Uphill district is the castle built for William the Conqueror. Inside its an original copy of the Magna Carta and its ramparts offer fabulous city views. Across the cobbled square which houses the large Christmas market is huge Lincoln Cathedral whose unusual façade features 2 tall towers, while another at its centre overlooks the Bishop’s Palace.

Connecting the cathedral quarter with the Downhill district is aptly named Steep Hill, a narrow street lined with unique shops and historic buildings including the Jew’s House. Even older are the Roman Newport Arch, Mint Wall and the well on Bailgate.

This road slopes down to meet the River Witham at High Bridge, a stone-arched structure with a half-timbered building atop that is the oldest of its kind in England. Lincoln boat trips depart from the Brayford Pool just west.

Another monument is the 18th-century Ellis Mill, opposite the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The Collection combines an archaeology museum and art gallery, while The Lawn has a conference centre and the Joseph Banks Conservatory, displaying artefacts he brought back from adventures with Captain Cook.

Booking.com’s Lincoln accommodation covers luxury waterfront hotels, guest houses by the university and cheap apartments near the train station.

We primarily chose Lincoln to do a parkrun event on the Saturday morning with then an explore into Lincoln in the afternoon. Lincoln was a nice small city to walk around especially with the castle and cathedral. It was enhanced with the 1940s day they were holding there that day. Plenty of shops & tea rooms. A few rowdy groups of drinkers on stag / hen / birthday events but that's common in most cities. The city is generally clean & tidy and lot's of tourists walking around.

Lincoln is a beautiful place.

Lincoln is a beautiful place. We visited the castle and cathedral, bomber command, and Talleshaw castle. For breakfast Stokes high bridge cafe is fantastic, lunch was a great tapas bar Olivares where you can sit outside and relax and evening meal The Bontanist is a wonderful food experience and great cocktails with live music. What more could you ask for.

What an incredible hidden gem Lincoln is.

What an incredible hidden gem Lincoln is. You think up the hill by the cathedral and castle, Steep Hill and the Strait are about it but then when you start to explore you find Roman walls, steep steps down to Lindum Road, the Bradford Pool, the river walk and some lovely independent shops. The highlight has to be the cathedral in all its glory. Magnificent inside and out. There is an entrance fee and for those not fainthearted there are roof and tower tours one of which involves 300 odd steps. Just make sure you have sturdy footwear. For walking around this beautiful city.

Lincoln is my hometown, and the emotional ties I feel to the place would obviously not apply to everyone. However, on a sunny summer's day you can enjoy shopping on pleasant little leafy streets, some good food and drink, an interesting museum and art gallery, plus some great historical buildings and ruins dating as far back as Roman times. Don't forget to climb Steep Hill, as that's a must for every Lincoln visitor who likes a challenge!

Lincoln Cathedral & Castle are well worth a visit.

Lincoln Cathedral & Castle are well worth a visit. The castle is very interesting & the cathedral currently has a beautiful display of textile art called 'Threads Through the Bible'. I was very fortunate to see this as I was told that it had arrived early. Entry into the Cathedral is £12.95 but if you also plan to visit the Castle, keep hold of your ticket as you can get a discount if you show it. I also enjoyed looking around some of the independent shops & stopping off in some of the nice cafes.

A great place to stay to enjoy Lincoln. A short walk to the city centre. Hotel has parking (£8.50 for 24 hrs), is clean, warm, friendly staff and a very decent breakfast included in the price. The dining area for breakfast is really nicely furnished and a nice space to sit and chat whilst watching the world go by. We enjoyed our stay and will be back.
