The Glory of Medieval England

Lincoln was a powerhouse of medieval England and retains amazing monuments from that period. In the Uphill district is the castle built for William the Conqueror. Inside its an original copy of the Magna Carta and its ramparts offer fabulous city views. Across the cobbled square which houses the large Christmas market is huge Lincoln Cathedral whose unusual façade features 2 tall towers, while another at its centre overlooks the Bishop’s Palace.

Connecting the cathedral quarter with the Downhill district is aptly named Steep Hill, a narrow street lined with unique shops and historic buildings including the Jew’s House. Even older are the Roman Newport Arch, Mint Wall and the well on Bailgate.

This road slopes down to meet the River Witham at High Bridge, a stone-arched structure with a half-timbered building atop that is the oldest of its kind in England. Lincoln boat trips depart from the Brayford Pool just west.

Another monument is the 18th-century Ellis Mill, opposite the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The Collection combines an archaeology museum and art gallery, while The Lawn has a conference centre and the Joseph Banks Conservatory, displaying artefacts he brought back from adventures with Captain Cook.

I work occasionally in Lincoln and only live 35 miles away. I was attending an event and decided to stay over making a weekend enabling us to explore the more historic areas of the city and restaurants away from the city centre. Enjoyed it very much and more left to explore

Lincoln Cathedral and the Castle were really worth visiting.

Lincoln Cathedral and the Castle were really worth visiting. The cathedral has extensive stained glass windows, some of the best I've seen, also don't forget to ask about the "Lincoln imp". The castle has some unique features in the Victorian prison area, along with terrific views from the boundary walls ramparts. The old part of Lincoln has many Tudor or older buildings which are now shops and pubs. One street called 'Steep Hill' has that name for a very good reason, and has some lovely quirky shops to visit along its length. The bottom of Steep Hill runs into the newer and very good shopping area of the city. We enjoyed Lincoln over the 2 days there.

Very good. Worth the visit which was our first. We were there for about 6 hours including food and drink and started with the Cathedral and Castle, right up on top of a high hill so parked nearer to those to avoid the longer steep walk up from the Town Centre first. Both are lovely sights where you can spend some time in the area. Then we walked down to the long High Street for a look around some of the shops. We ate at Panda Mami. Great Chinese based buffet with many other international dishes available to choose from as well.

Iian and Anna were so welcoming; they prepared a wonderful breakfast: homemade jams and cookies. The place exudes warmth. The old-fashioned room was so quaint; a throwback to the past. Every decorative item brought a smile. Enjoyed the genuinely welcoming hosts - felt like visiting favorite relatives.

The location was perfect.

The location was perfect. However, the hotel was misrepresented. We thought we had booked a 4 star hotel whereas in reality it only justified 2 stars, perhaps only 1 star! Our room was on the second floor and the hotel did not have a lift. The first room we were offered had a torn dirty carpet so we insisted on moving. The second room was a little better. Breakfast was included in the price but was 'continental'. In reality it was cerial and toast. No cheese or cold meats. The receptionist went off-duty at 9pm and locked up the hotel so there was no staff on duty over night. We were given a door code to get back in.

Not a chain hotel. Quirky with lots of character. Converted from a former hospital. Set in parkland. Excellent location in historic Uphill Lincoln. Also close to Museum of Lincolnshire Life. Adjacent to the Castle and close to restaurants and pubs. Cathedral 10 minutes walk. Twenty minutes walk via Steep Hill down to city centre. Nice continental breakfast included with good coffee/tea, cereals, juices, croissants,toast and some fruit. Staff excellent throughout.

Quirky property very close to Lincoln centre. Nice room, comfy bed, well equipped, clean and comfortable. Would definitely consider staying again when in the area. Light breakfast delivered to the room and room fridge with orange and milk worked ok for me. Full English nearby for extra money if you need more. Hotel is a reworked Victorian church which is nice and a little bit different. City centre parking to boot.

Breakfast was good, especially as it was served by a cheerful little robot. Beds were comfortable, complimentary drinks were well stocked. The hotel was situated opposite a useful little shopping centre and a large Lidl, and about 6 minutes drive in to Lincoln. There was plenty of parking, and the room was clean. The staff seemed friendly and helpful. I would be happy to stay here again.

The hotel is in a good location for visiting friends or businesses South Lincoln area and Lincoln. There's a lot of traffic but the rooms are double glazed so it's not a noise issue. I stay was good to average for this kind of hotel.
