FAQs about hotels in Norwich

A Centre of Commerce Through The Ages

Once an important medieval trading centre, Norwich remains a popular shopping destination. The Chapelfield centre is the newest addition, whereas a historic shop sells the city’s most famous export: Colman’s Mustard. Castle Mall is underground, in a hill topped with a keep, part of the 12th-century castle founded by William the Conqueror.

Dating to the same era is the large cobbled square housing a 6-day market. It was said that Norwich had a church for every week, and while that is no longer true, over 30 medieval churches still exist. The cathedral was built using stone from Normandy and boasts England’s 2nd largest cloisters and 2nd tallest spire.

Colourful medieval façades line Elm Hill and the Guildhall is another fine example of the period. Half-timbered Dragon Hall was a trading hall, while St Andrew’s and Blackfriars Halls constitute England’s most intact friary. The 14th-century Cow Tower sits by the River Wensum upstream from Pulls Ferry, the train station and Norwich City FC.

Reportedly, Norwich once had a pub for every day, and today’s traditional inns and modern bars are certainly popular with the student population. Other entertainment options include the Theatre Royal and Playhouse.

Norwich accommodation on Booking.com includes historic hotels with pools, city centre guest houses and riverside apartments, all near to Norwich Airport.

Norwich is a vibrant city with a rich medieval past: a beautiful cathedral and close, which you don't have to pay to get into and has free 1-hour guided tours. Other must places to visit are the Norman castle, numerous medieval churches, riverside walks and a huge array of independant shops and lots of locally brewed ales. Also don't miss the excellent city museum at the Bridewell and the Sainsbury's Centre at the university campus which has an excellent indoor and outdoor scupture exhibion as well as fascinating seasonal exhibitions. Norwich is also justly famous for its street food and independant restaurants. The city is clean, has large pedestrianized areas and an excellent bus service. Investigate the varied speciality guided walking tours available - I enjoyed a 2-hour 'Naughty Norwich Tour' for £5!

A real hidden gem of a city with a huge amount of history.

A real hidden gem of a city with a huge amount of history. The medieval cathedral alone is worth at least a morning. There's other stuff to see and a few pubs to have refreshments right on the river - and there are places to see live local bands in the centre. Never realised that the small city Norwich had so much to offer from Baroque to Rock - and from Gothic to Goths..

It feels like a happy, friendly city.

It feels like a happy, friendly city. The city centre is inviting, with plenty of trees and benches. There is some lovely architecture in the older buildings and the riverside area is pretty. Everything is within easy walking distance of the station. I really enjoyed a visit to Slice & Dice board game cafe. The staff there were lovely and they serve fabulous food! I was only there for a long overnight stay, but I will visit Norwich again for longer.

The castle museum and Art Gallery was excellent although some Art rooms were very hot and stuffy when we visited which caused us not to appreciate them as well as we could. We enjoyed visiting the local shops and cafes. There is a large choice to suit all tastes. It was also good that disabled drivers get a reduction in parking charges.

This is not a luxury hotel, but then it's much cheaper than many centrally located hotels in Norwich. There is no breakfast option, but rooms include a kitchenette so you can fix your own breakfast at a time that suits you. My room was clean, quiet with a good comfortable bed & Samsung smart TV (with Netflix). The heating worked well, nice walk-in shower with plenty of hot water. Friendly staff and a late check-out is a reasonable £15 extra.

Hotel Belmonte is conveniently located at walking distance from the railway station and the old city centre. The room was basic, but clean, comfy and warm. There's a night club on the ground floor, so on Friday and Saturday night here was music from 11 PM till 1 AM sharp. I'm quite a night owl though, so it didn't bother me. The hotel is located on Prince Edward Road, which has loads of restaurants, bars, and supermarkets.

Lovely period building in a central location, lovely part of Norwich city centre. Near to everything but quite peaceful. 24 hour parking at £10 in the car hotel park was useful for us too. Our bedroom was spacious, light and well insulated. No noise disturbance at all and we slept very well. Very nice staff: friendly and helpful.
