Staff, hotel has cool decor, bar is very pleasant for a drink and also to eat lunch or dinner, limited menu but what is there is really tasty and good. Breakfast was included and the selection is more than adequate, something for everyone’s taste I would say. Rooms very nice, and hotel is very convenient to ferry port, we would definitely stay here again.

The room was outstanding. The head of the Bistro Pierre restaurant - Karen - was amazing and so helpful. She really made it all come together. The food was good and the prices were spot on. William Yard is a magnificent Victorian Naval port that has been sympathetically restored and there is a range of bars and restaurants nearby. Bistrot Pierre is at the heart of the Yard. Plymouth is not a very pretty place but it is worth the trip just to see/stay at William Yard and Bistro Pierre. Outstanding rooms and overall ambience. Will go back no question.

Rachel and Faye in reception bring the Imperial to life. Their warm smiles and friendliness make this a homely and lovely B and B. Rachel is an excellent front office manager and ensures the establishment is run really well. The property is in an excellent location for shopping, walks on the Hoe and the many attractions of the Barbican. Beds were so comfy and towels were plush and cosy. Buffet breakfast was very good quality. Rooms were clean and really comfortable. It has a home from home feel.

FAQs about hotels in Plymouth

Life By the Ocean Wave

From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.

Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.

At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.

Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.

Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

What guests said about Plymouth:

A vibrant city.

A vibrant city. It had a decent shopping centre and there were loads of pubs and eateries, some chains and some independent. The city had a student vibe, with a lively nightlife. The areas on the cost were full of places to eat with sea views. Some parts of the city were quirky and pretty, others were quite plain.

We went to Plymouth as it is convenient for us to visit family over the holiday period. We know it well having lived locally in the past so we do not go as tourists and are not best placed to advise on whether it would make a good trip for others. I do think Devon has more attractive places to go but Plymouth is very good for access, it has great restaurants and the Theatre Royal which has good productions.

Great city, wonderful views from the Hoe, lovely meandering walks and a good vibe as new buildings go up too. We love walking along the sea and into the harbour area and have also enjoyed a trip on a viewing boat to the naval sites around the corner, past the mysterious 'Christie' island which apparently is going to be hosting guests at some stage. A vibey, city filled with a student vibe and some great restaurants and history. Also went on a trip to Totness on the train and all worked perfectly and it was a good trip, so enjoy it and look below the surface at the history too!

Plymouth is a great destination really especially during the Summer - lots of different venues and the ferries mean you can get to other places too with minimal fuss. Plenty of eating opportunities and handy for trips to Dartmoor or into Cornwall (don't tell everyone about the Rame peninsula!!).
