FAQs about hotels in Plymouth

Life By the Ocean Wave

From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.

Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.

At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.

Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.

Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

For a complete all round break or holiday Plymouth really bangs the gong. All sports from walking the moors to wild water swimming and from tasting Plymouth gin to enjoying a pastie and from catching the Cremyll ferry to a ride on the open top bus. It's all available in abundance.

I enjoyed visiting the Box gallery, St Andrew's church and the older part of Plymouth. I was very impressed with Royal William Yard which is an early 19th century complex built for the Royal Navy; it's now a leisure facility with housing. Well worth visiting and it's free! It is also great to walk along Plymouth Hoe and see the views of the harbor, Drake's island etc. The Mayflower steps were an anti-climax as they are no longer visible; the Mayflower museum is small but interesting. I could probably have spent one or two days more there but I saw a lot in the time i was there. I walked a lot round Plymouth but there are bus services and also ferries if you want to cross elsewhere; boat cruises too but these are seasonal.

Plymouth is a great place to visit.

Plymouth is a great place to visit. Good shopping opportunities in the town and also the Barbican. One of the best coastal views and I live on the north coast of Cornwall. We ate in the Crowne Plaza but love the Treasury and pasta and pizza bar on the Barbican. The theatre has great shows. Plenty of bars and places to eat.

The location is superb for a short city stay as you can easily walk into the main shopping areas such as Drake Circus, plus the cinemas and theatres nearby (all within 10 mins) – equally for bars and restaurants, including the Barbican. The hotel is right by the Hoe for walking around some green space and taking in the views of Plymouth Sound, while there's a cracking panoramic view of the city from the restaurant on the top floor. And we also found the fitness and leisure facilities a bonus to enjoy.

We often stay at this hotel as it is a short walk to The Theatre Royal, Plymouth Hoe, The Barbican and to the shops. There is also parking with a small charge for 24 hours at this hotel. We enjoy using the swimming pool, sauna and steam room also. The pool is not the best but it is adequate for a nights stay.
