Southampton FAQ: Tips for every trip

Historic Port of Walls

Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.

There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.

Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.

There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.

If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

Southampton is a great city, with so much character.

Southampton is a great city, with so much character. It is very easy to navigate by bus or train if you want to travel more widely. The city centre is compact and well-resourced with theatres, restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops. The parks are extensive and beautiful, containing some rare and exotic trees (for instance cork and Joshua trees) and a diversity of wild birds. The locals are friendly and on two occasions proved very helpful in directing us to neighbouring districts. The accessibility to Isle Of Wight, the Channel Islands and Northern France, makes Southampton a great gateway for exotic day trips too.

Check what major events are on when you visit as it will affect your room price. Lots to see. Especially in the navy history field. Car parking can be a problem as a lot is “ on street “ especially with the smaller establishments.

Southampton has a lovely walkable district with great vibes along the harbour. Very friendly, loved the Dark Arts Potion Bar, a fun way to kick off our trip. A great walk around what is left of the Old City Walls with lots of maritime history.

Good location. Easy drive to Southampton cruise terminal. Breakfast excellent. Staff exceedingly helpful. Very clean and bright. Didn't expect much as I believed it to be a basic 'motorway stop off' hotel. So pleased with everything at such an excellent price that we have booked for January when we sail again from Southampton.
