The Swan Hotel, Alresford is an 18th-century hotel located in the centre of Alresford, just 15 minutes drive from Winchester.

Visited the lovely town of Alresford to attend the VE day celebrations being organised by the Watercress Line heritage railway. Upon arrival at the Swan we were in informed that our room had been upgraded to one of the self contained apartments, this was a lovely surprise and much appreciated, thank you. The apartment was well equipped, clean, comfortable and had plenty of space for the two of us, we slept very well. I enjoyed a few pints in the well stocked bar ( I recommend the Flower Potts ale), it is brewed locally and tastes very nice. The full English Breakfast was tasty and substantial, there are plenty of choices on the breakfast menu but i always go for the full english. The food menu in the bar is comprehensive and reasonably priced, there is something for everyone. The staff are friendly and helpful, I have stayed at the Swan on a number of occasions over the years and it never fails to deliver, thank you.

We liked the location of our hotel giving walking access to a High Street with good shopping, the Cathedral was close by and had very pleasant grounds round about to enjoy. The bus station also if you wanted to go further afield. Our visit also included The St Hillier garden centre. In the past we have taken the bus to Alton to use The Watercress Line steam Heritage Railway and noticed that the bus route also passed very close to The Science Museum.

An absolutely beautiful city easy to walk around with a good shopping area and many historic buildings steeped in history. Beautiful river walks along the river Itchen and further afield to the water meadows. A very good cafe restaurant life to suit all.

Winchester is relatively small, but very pleasant.

Winchester is relatively small, but very pleasant. The central part is easily walkable. There are also scenic nature walks along the small river and outskirts. Make sure you do the short hike to the top of the round hill above the town for the view. It could be a quiet getaway for several days or longer, or a short visit to see the historical sites, including the amazing cathedral. Parts of the town could use some sprucing up--you get the sense that local budgets are tight. But the local population is young and the town is child friendly. The restaurant choices are somewhat limited, so manage your expectations or do your searches ahead of time.

Winchester Great Hall was interesting with good information.

Winchester Great Hall was interesting with good information. Questions posed for children are also interesting for adults, e.g. finding the stained glass dedication to the project manager, the only commoner shown. The ticket can be combined to climb the West Gate and visit the Winchester museum. Ticket lasts for one year. The water meadows and the gardens around the Cathedral are lovely. Recommend small garden in Cathedral close. Look for the stone fox sleeping under the bench. The bells were ringing on the Easter Monday, which added to the pleasure. The Cathedral itself is always interesting and is large enough to find new information. E.g., the Anthony Gormley statue in the Crypt, particularly if it has been raining so it has its feet in water. Good range of shops and restaurants for all budgets. Recommend Taste of Gurkhas close to St Alfred's statue. Note, parking is free on Sunday's and bank holidays in council carparks.

Beautiful, historic city, perfect for a long weekend or as a centre for a much longer break to include trips out to interesting locations nearby. Lovely to explore on foot. Plenty of eating places and pubs. We enjoyed delicious food and excellent service at the dog-friendly Basil Leaf Deli. It's worth a stroll up St Giles Hill for a stunning view of the city.

The Staff went out of their way to help us. When we needed to Taxi although there was a phone directly to the Taxi she Called. When we checked out we were allowed to leave our bags at the Hotel. then one receptionist gave us insight into the Winchester as to where to go and because it appeared that Brian was evident. She loaned us an umbrella! She went out of her way to help! Awesome!

Booking online through Booking.com was seamless. We emailed ahead to let the hotel know we would check in late and needed a car space which was also handled very well by the hotel. The cleaning staff were lovely, friendly, dedicated and attentive. The location is really central in Winchester and there's plenty of safe off-road parking for customers.
