Echoes of the Age of Empires
Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.
Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.
Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.
At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

Hvar is a great spot for a few days.
Hvar is a great spot for a few days. Great waterfront walks and plenty of restaurants and bars attracting a vibrant and sophisticated crowd. Take a boat trip, or hire a boat (if you have a license) to explore the nearby islands. Walk up the hill to the fortress for great views over the town and harbour. this is a great little island town! much to do, bustling, but not obnoxiously so. beaches are great and plentiful. I said our amount of time there was just right, but only because we tried to squeeze everything in in our 3 days and got tired!! but could def stay longer and go at a slower pace. GO TO HVAR BEACH CLUB. we splurged for a bed, but can do a chair or just beach easily and enjoy just as much! and find the ferry to Carpe Diem, day or night, go soak it up for a couple of hours its an amazing spot.Guest review byJenniferUnited States - 8.0

A lot of student were there as just finished their A levels so the town too busy at night for us 60 year old. I have been three times before but not in high season and I loved it. The hotel offered free transfer of 'luggage only' to near the ferry. That was really handy as temperature was in the late 30's. Hvar is a lovely island with lots to see and this shouldn't colour your experience or disaude you from coming but its probably one of the most expensive places we've been to for a night out. Food is good quality and priced around Central London pricing but the drinks were crazy, coming in at around 8E for a 330ml can of beer or 16-18e for an aperol spritz if you wanted to go to a beach bar. Better value if you can find restaurants doing drinks but I appreciate that you come to Hvar to go to its beachbars etc Also, at the time of writing (2025) 50/50 of the restaurants and the bars were cash only and those that did take card you couldnt split the bill so it made for an inconvenient end to the meal (with one person in our group of 8 having to foot the bill each evening). We were in Hvar in late April, before things get crazy (or so I hear). It felt like a mini Split, with similar narrow walking streets, a fort above the city, beautiful beaches and very few cars. We loved walking all over the island, visiting the cemetery, the beach, gelato, people watching, etc. We're not so much into the crazy night-life so our timing was perfect, as was Hvar.Guest review byKathrynUnited States

We were familiar with the location as we stayed at Hotel Podstine (next door) on a previous visit to Hvar. As Podstine had not opened yet, we stayed at Shades of Blue instead which in hindsight worked out perfectly. The water (and a great swimming spot) is easily accessible down the stairs and Hvar Old Town is a short and scenic walk around the coastal path. The pool area was really good- always beds available despite the hotel being very busy. Breakfast had a really good selection but due to being buffet style was always a bit cold unless you were lucky enough to get something as it just came out.
