Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

A much less 'touristy' side of Italy, without the heavy shops and queuing. Much more relaxed with a more local feel. Some beautiful beaches and a too many amazing seafood restaurants to explore! The train is a great way to get around, reliable and cheap compared to taxi's, which are quite expensive. The city is big, the old town is beautiful, the opening hours of shops and restaurants are unpredictable. Don't expect small romantic restaurants and cafes like in the north of Italy. Lots of beaches around as well as little places to visit. Food is delicious!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
Lovely city.
Lovely city. We stayed in the new town & got the public bus into the old town, which is a charming tangle of small streets with shops & restaurants, gathered around the old port. We were only there for half a day. It would have been good to have more time to explore! We ate at a little restaurant around the corner from our flat called Naturale.which was really lovely ….a wonderful husband & wife team, serving up local specialties. I have added 2 photos - the first and third of street scenes. The app has also added 4 other pictures which I did not add, which are not of Bari & I would like to have removed.
