Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

Lovely city.
Lovely city. We stayed in the new town & got the public bus into the old town, which is a charming tangle of small streets with shops & restaurants, gathered around the old port. We were only there for half a day. It would have been good to have more time to explore! We ate at a little restaurant around the corner from our flat called Naturale.which was really lovely ….a wonderful husband & wife team, serving up local specialties. I have added 2 photos - the first and third of street scenes. The app has also added 4 other pictures which I did not add, which are not of Bari & I would like to have removed. Safe, bustling city.
Safe, bustling city. Wide selection of bars and restaurants. Highly recommend Nicolaus Restaurant if you want fresh fish and to get a way from wall to wall pasta. Lots of churches and history, guided walking tour well worth it. Train Station well placed and good for some day trips out. Generally good value for money. On of the best things about Bari was the short train ride to Trani which was more up market than Bari and much nicer all together. Given a choice I would stay in Trani rather than Bari and have a day trip to Bari. Rough around the edges of Bari city. Lots of Graffiti in and around the city.Guest review byDonUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We went to Bari at the end of a 2 week holiday to get plane home snd decided to spend 2 days there having previously got no further than the station or the airport . We now love Bari , what an interesting city full of the hussle of life . There is nothing very special in this city.
There is nothing very special in this city. It could be the last city to be visited in Italy. It is a small city, two days at most is enough. There are many and varied places to eat. There is no need for city transportation. Everything is within walking distance. There is no need to come just for Bari. Bari is a busy holiday destination , the old town is rambling and buzzing with activities. The new city is laid out in grids with a lot of traffic free areas. There are lots of parks and beautiful beaches and it is an ideal base to explore Puglia. Lots of places to eat and delicious meals that won't break the bank. Bari is amazing.
Bari is amazing. There is so much to see and do in Bari (and so many things to eat!) and it is such a great place to base yourself for day trips , (I used bus and train) to surrounding towns and attractions. A walking food tour is essential for both the food and fascinating info about Bari. Most things are in walking distance from Bari vecchia, including the waterfront and train station.
