FAQs about hotels in Genoa

Ship Shape and Fancy Free

Right on the Ligurian coast, Genoa features Europe’s largest historic quarter and Italy’s largest seaport. As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.

By the old port (Porto Antico), there are several bars and restaurants serving the local specialty, pesto. Other Genoese favorites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade, Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighborhood, where colorful boats bob up and down.

The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.

South is the historic quarter with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

As you approach Genova Airport, look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the "Superb City." Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodations, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

You can do the main sites in a day.

You can do the main sites in a day. The city is very clean and easy to navigate. I would avoid the tourist bus and walk instead as lovely buildings to admire. We also did the funicular which was a good experience and ideal if you are a walker. Restaurants were expensive so we went with fast food which was readily available

Between the buildings to view, the shopping, the eating of both local cuisine and variety of things to purchase & the museums, aquarium etc - one could easily spend 2 to 3 full days of interesting fun & food.

Genova (Genoa) is very interesting.

Genova (Genoa) is very interesting. One of Europe's most influential maritime areas. Wonderful buildings and an interesting coast. Very historical due to being Italy's largest port. It was heavily bombed during the war and you can still see damage on some buildings. There are many beautiful painted ceilings even in ordinary buildings and some spectacular ones. The old town (Caruggi) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a densely populated medieval part. It is wonderful to walk through it during the day. There are many interesting little shops. I did come across the red light district in the Caruggi and it was not threatening although I would not walk this area at night. There are some wonderful old buildings and churches to explore. As with most Italian cities these days nearly every building or wall out of the main tourist areas is covered in ugly graffiti. It is such a shame to see this everywhere. Genova is the home of blue jeans and Pesto among other things.

Genoa truly impressed me — the city’s hillside layout creates spectacular, tightly built houses and buildings connected across the steep slopes, an impressive piece of engineering. Walking through the narrow, high streets and the beautiful old town was a great experience, and it felt safe both during the day and in the evening. We also visited Boccadasse, a charming little fishing village about 20 minutes away by public transport, which feels like a small version of Cinque Terre. There are also boat tours to Portofino, so staying in Genoa offers plenty of opportunities for memorable experiences.

I don't know why this city is not more on the map for long...

I don't know why this city is not more on the map for long weekend breaks. There is plenty to see and do here, the atmosphere is fantastic, the food excellent and the people are among the friendliest in Italy. Top tips - the Aquarium, views from the Porto Antico, some absolutely astonishingly beautiful church interiors, the lift to and views from Castelletto, and... just wandering around in the posh areas east of Piazza de Ferrari or among the "carrugia" in the car-free old city. Oh, and you can take a day trip to the Cinque Terre... And everything is reasonably priced...! Go now, before everyone else discovers it!!

Genoa was fun to walk around and visit the amazing churches in town, had some good local food, and hopped a train to nearby town of Comogly. Do be aware that at night some I would avoid some of the darker walkways closer to the train station, as we did have a couple sketchy moments. Fine during the morning and day though.

Splendid old hotel of a gracious and elegant antiquity that has largely vanished from the rest of Italy, and therefore all the more a joy to discover. Wonderfully charming and helpful woman at the Reception desk who could not be more generous with excellent restaurant suggestions and patient explanations of how to find them. Very quiet at night and superb value for such a central location, immediately adjacent to the university and the historic port.
