Extraordinary! Excellent service: the hotel is in the pedestrian zone so they give you options where to park (we parked for free in a university lot nearby) and pick you up / deliver you to your car. They carry your suitcases for you to your room since stairs and some walking is required. Rooms are incredible, each one in a separate « cave » completely refurbished. Heated floors in the bathroom, smart Tv. Amazing breakfast, incredible view from the door of our room, friendly and helpful staff.

Matera is all about the atmosphere in the Sassi rather than gallery or museum based. Be prepared to do a lot of walking and much of that up and down steps. The restaurant Stano on the edge of the Sassi is very good for a special meal. Given its UNESCO status , prices are unsurprisingly higher than in the rest of Basilcata. However , they compare well with other major Italian tourist destinations (Rome , Florence , Venice etc.).

Matera — A Fascinating Blend of History, Culture, and Stunning Views
Matera is truly a must-see destination. Its rich and unique history left a deep impression on me. Known for the ancient cave dwellings called Sassi, Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with settlements dating back over 9,000 years. Once a symbol of poverty, the Sassi have been transformed into a UNESCO World Heritage Site and now host charming homes, boutique hotels, restaurants, and artisan shops.
Today, Matera is a vibrant tourist town offering a perfect mix of history, culture, and modern comforts. The historic atmosphere, combined with beautiful views and countless excellent restaurants and shops, creates a truly unforgettable experience. Walking through the ancient streets while overlooking breathtaking landscapes was simply magical.
Matera’s fascinating past and its remarkable transformation make it a place that should be on every traveler’s list.

Don’t use google maps to get around, it will take you the longest way and as you know there are loads of steps to negotiate in Matera, but this is its charm and history. The cave suite we stayed in was amazing I would recommend for its beauty, location and the wonderful staff who were always on hand to help and were the kindest of people, a credit to Matera

Matera is ancient and beautiful.
Matera is ancient and beautiful. Also of historical sites to see and caves to explore. Many good places to have apertovo, dinner and gelato. Be aware there is an extreme amount of climbing stairs. If you have difficulty doing that…this is not the place to visit.

Matera is a true experience, different from any other town you've ever visited, because the old town is built into the cave walls. I hate using the word "unique," but Matera is the definition of it! Highly recommended for a memorable visit.

Beautiful city, definitely worth doing a walking tour if you can to get a feel of the history of the place. We were there for 3 nights and 2 days which was a perfect amount of time. And not as expensive as we were expecting.

The perfect place to stay for visiting Matera! it was mine and my partners first time in Italy and we absolutely loved Hydria rooms as our first stop. The room has everything you need, lots of space and very clean. The location was ideal and the staff were also extremely friendly and helpful. Would 100% recommend to anyone staying in Matera!
The room was excellent! A huge cave room with a tasteful modern design made for a unique and comfortable stay. The location is also fantastic – the hotel is in one of the older more original parts of Matera with cafes and restaurants right on the street, easy walk to major sites and not amongst the busier ‘new’ part of town.
Our 2nd trip to this hotel in Matera and we'll definitely be back.
Such a beautiful setting and the cave rooms are stunning. The reception and breakfast rooms are also magical. Had the breakfast room to outlrselves for two mornings out of our trip (0830) and such a fantastic setting and fabulous choice at breakfast too.
Staying at this hotel is a great and unique experience. Imagine living in a cave as people used to do in times of old. But add the important comforts of modern life, like a comfortable bed and WiFi together with hospitality. Also, this is a great place to explore Matera, a gorgeous town that’s truly one of a kind.
It was a wonderfully unique experience in the Hotel,
The rooms remind you of the old city, an example of what It may have been like in the Caves. The location allows you to step right out and explore all Matera has to offer.
