Located among undulating meadows and Chianti vineyards, Siena shines as a jewel of the Tuscan Renaissance, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience the famous Palio di Siena horse race, catch the pulse of the city at Piazza del Campo, visit the beautiful Duomo cathedral…and fall in love with this charming city!
Founded by Etruscans around 900 BC, the city was first conquered by Romans and later by Lombards. The Middle Ages saw it becoming the independent and flourishing Republic of Siena, until its annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The economic difficulties that followed turned out to be a blessing for the preservation of its historic centre. Adorned with frescoes by Ghirlandaio and bass-reliefs by Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Jacopo della Quercia, the Duomo represents the highest expression of this well-kept legacy. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, with the Palazzo Pubblico and the Gaia Fountain, is still the heart and soul of the city. Follow the labyrinth of narrow streets and passages that irradiate from there and you will be enchanted by its romantic atmosphere from ancient times.
The closest airports are Peretola Airport in Florence and Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa, though Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna is also well connected. While planning your trip, don’t forget to check out the Siena accommodation deals on Booking.com!
Beautiful city, small enough to walk around. But came across a number of miserable locals. The reason I point this out is we have never experienced this in Italy before. It felt like the locals had had enough of visitors. This is fine but don’t market your city as a destination. Due this this type of reception we will not be returning.

The history was amazing.
The history was amazing. Retainment of Siena's traditions and the locals make this a very authentic and inviting place to visit. Siena provided a base for traveling out to other towns such as Montepulciano and Montalcino. Amazing Duomo to visit. Would definatley go back

A beautiful city.
A beautiful city. A very relaxed vibe after a very busy Florence. Gorgeous ancient streets and magnificent architecture and of course the Duoma and Campanile. Lovely restaurants and a great park were you can walk the City walls which afford tremendous views. Very accessible with excellent bus and train service to surrounding must see places. Easy place to wander around and the big bonus is they have kept the old part of Siena, largely traffic free, so it feels safe and it's much quieter than say Florence.

It’s not a big city so everything is accessible by foot-so long as you are reasonably mobile. Must see are the duomo and the major art gallery in the former hospital (just opposite the duomo). This is not stuffy or “worthy” and includes some astonishingly good modern art installations.
Nightlife is not for party animals. You can eat well at reasonable prices and hang out in the Campo with an aperol spritz (other similar amaros are available) and watch the swallows as the sun goes down. What’s not to like?

I absolutely fell in love with Siena.
I absolutely fell in love with Siena. This charming little town stole my heart with its winding streets, unique atmosphere, and timeless beauty. The local cuisine is delicious, and so is the Chianti wine. I could wander through its alleys for hours, feeling the spirit of its historic contrade. Although Siena looks like a place frozen in time, life here flows in perfect harmony with its historic charm. It doesn’t feel like stepping back into the past, but rather like witnessing how the locals seamlessly blend tradition with the present day — preserving the spirit of this ancient town. Unlike Florence, Siena isn’t overrun by tourists, which only adds to its authentic character.

Easy to walk around if you are reasonably fit. That way you don’t miss anything . Don’t stick to main centre- walk all around . Also we went on the bus to San Gimingnano which was easy to use contactless or with a pre bought ticket from the ticket machine

Lucca was so helpful and had prearranged valet parking for us with Valet Leonardo which worked really smoothly. We were a little early for check in so Lucca kept our bags whilst we walked to the centre of Siena. The small, discreet hotel is perfectly central to explore the city by foot. The rooms are so characterful and there was a large selection for breakfast in the morning.
The Hotel Athena was an excellent place to stay in Siena with a high level of service. When we arrived and parked our car, a staff member came down to greet us and help us with our luggage. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and it was a quick walk up to the center of town. We only stayed one night, but I could see it being a nice base for a longer stay in Tuscany.
Great location with the luxury of a swimming pool after a long day sight seeing. Fabulous welcome from the owners and all staff extremely friendly that made our stay extra special. View from breakfast room and pool to Siena is stunning !!
