Hakone is a picturesque, natural location close to Tokyo with (weather permitting) great views of Mount Fuji, a beautiful natural forests, and a beautiful lake. There are plenty of activities for a week long stay, with convenient transport options with the Hakone Freepass. The sightseeing boat, ropeway, and the open air museum were highlights for our family and kids. The area is set up mostly to accomodate day-trippers, so don’t expect a thrilling night life or shopping options. In fact, you’ll probably struggle to even find restaurants that open past six o’clock. Make sure you plan ahead accordingly.Guest review byJosh - 10.0

Hakone is spread out which is part of the adventure so it is important to choose the right accommodation with train stations close to places of interest. It is mystical and very calming with the mountain setting. Excellent Onsens and if you want to experience a traditional Ryokan it is a fabulous place. We had limited time so went to the Outdoor Art Museum which is amazing. Lovely small town where you can wonder around and take in all it has to offer. If you love the outdoors there are walks, lake Ashi and many other activities to enjoy. Do some research before you arrive and plan for a minimum of 2-3 days.Guest review byKymNew Zealand - 8.0

Peaceful and beautiful mountain scenery at summer like pictures of Spirited Away. There will be some small onsens on the mountain, which is easy and friendly with residents and travellers. It's a pity that the ropeway of the Owakudani was stopped due to the weather forecast of thunderstorm. But the officers at the ticket office and the travel center are quite nice to help with the consultancy. Hakone is a great place to spend several days in the mountains. Very scenic and a wide range of activities and places to see including the open air sculpture park, ropeway, onsens and steep train rides. Definitely a great place to hike and explore the area. Hakone is a green antidote to the hectic city life.We loved the Botanical Wetlands and would recommend it along with the garden at the Hakone museum if you are interested in plants and gardens.The trip from Gora to Hakone on the Tozan line was a fantastic journey through the forest on a track lined with white hydrangeas. Once you worked out how to use the Hakone Freepass all went well. It is very complex looking to start with. The bus system is very good and easy to get help.Unfortunately in the four days we had there Mt Fuji hid behind clouds. Will have to go again.
