Very well located next to the Canal & short walking distance to JR Station. Love the 25sqm spacious room for 2pax, rare find for hotels in Japan at good price. Toilet, shower cubicles & even a small powder room, all kept separate so very convenient.

Hotel Neu Schloss Otaru, hotel in Otaru

Situated within the premises of Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park, Hotel Neu Schloss Otaru offers rooms with views of the ocean and a private open-air bath.

The in room open air bath and beautiful sea view. Bed was firm and comfortable but pillows are bad, providing virtually no support at all. It felt like resting your head on the mattress.

It was a really comfortable and cosy stay with my family of 6. The bedrooms were spacious with the 3 queen beds, and the futon beds were also very cosy to sleep with. Heating worked very well too. The space was really clean, like the toilets and the kitchen utensils.

Everything was perfect. The staff were amazing! Welcoming and kind and helped me with everything I needed. Even more than that, the guesthouse owner suggested to take me to a place I wanted to go in their car without asking for anything in return. They showed me the beautiful places of Otaru and because of them I had an amazing experience! :D I definitely recommend Wa No Kaze for everyone who comes to Otaru and Hokkaido! Bonus: the main tourist attractions are 15 minutes walk from the guesthouse!

Stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of our trip around Japan. We didn't have many interactions with staff other than the housekeeping staff. They were lovely to deal with. The rooms we chose not have cleaned every day. Instead, we would put our dirty towels, etc. In a bag outside our room and we would return in the afternoon to fresh clean towels. The size of the room was good. We had almost more room that we could use. Location: It was not on the main street in Otaru, ocer a few instead. That was perfect for us. We realised there was a covered walkway/ shopping street that was very convenient to keep out of the weather. The shower had really good water pressure! Having spare blankets within easy access was really good.

I really liked Otaru, even though it is small and doesn’t have too much to see. It’s really just the main shopping strip and the canal. There are a few museums and some spots in the mountains (there seems to be a ropeway that is poorly advertised but would have been perfect) but that’s about it. It’s really quite a charming place. The streetscape and history are both fascinating, and the food great - especially ankake yakisoba and kaisendon. I do think it would be an absolutely perfect place to end a trip and unwind for a few days before returning to reality.

A lovely old port town with many original buildings being repurposed for tourism - dining and glass making. Compact size makes walking around easy but in winter could be snow bound. Lots of great places to explore old Japanese culture and dining and drinking experiences. Lots of fresh seafood...many diners around the actual fish market shop with all types of Japanese cuisine... tempura...sakitori...sushi..shashimi...hotpot ...ramen etc..and absolutely amazing bakeries / patisseries and local ice cream and dairy products. Even wineries have opened up. And even more if you are a winter sports person with ski resorts on the town outskirts...seaon just closed when we were here. All this a simple train ride from Sapporo Airport -- ok maybe an 2 hour ride...not bad if straight off the plane from Sydney or Seoul or Tokyo into the Sapporo airport.

After coming from the big city of Sapporo we loved the smaller town of Otaru. Planned on just doing a day trip but changed to stay overnight. Wish we had taken a day off Sapporo and added it to Otaru. No lights on the canal as expected but we still loved Otaru. Easy to walk to everything and a lot to enjoy.

    We went during winter.

We went during winter. It is a small quiet town and most shops close around 5-6pm. So good to settle dinner early. As a small and quiet town, the place is generally quiet and peaceful after dusk. There is nothing to do after dusk and travelers can take a stroll down the Otaru canal and enjoy the night view.

Give the canal a pass, especially if you have been to Europe. Very underwhelming. Take the local train one stop to Shioya and hike the Shioya Maru-yama. It is about a 6km round trip hike up a local mountain with great views. Take the same train to Yoichi to tour the Nikka Whiskey Distillery and sample great whiskeys in the restaurant after the tour (book reservation for tour ahead of time and remember everything shuts down around 16:00).

We are avid travellers and as we live in the tropics, we often travel during winter to experience the snow. It was not our first visit to Otaru and we are experienced driving in snow. As the road to the property is a steep slope, with changes in temperature, the melted snow made the road too slippery to drive up. When I walked up, I slipped and fell and had to slide down to the bottom of the slope. We also saw a taxi alight passengers at the bottom of the slope, without luggage, it is possible to slowly climb.

The hotel is about 13 minutes walk from the Otaru station, not too far. The price is affordable and not expensive. The room and beds are really comfortable. The staffs are very friendly, helpful, supportive. They allowed me to self check in late at midnight with very detailed instructions and also support me my inquiries a lot! The hotel is not far from Otaru canal. Thanks so much for trying to answer many questions from me!. Would recommend to stay.

A very cool room, designed in a Japanese style! The room is clean and tidy, with a comfortable chair to sit in after walks around Otaru. In the morning, we were treated to a buffet breakfast. The breakfast is very rich and diverse for such a price. The owner is very polite and willingly answered questions about the city and accommodation. The hotel itself has a smoking room, an onsen bath (and a shower in the room).

Dormy Inn is located near Otaru train station. If taking a bus shuttle from Kiroro, the bus stops at an Otaruchikko station. We needed to take a short train ride train two stops to reach Otaru train station. We also liked that the market for fresh seafood is also nearby. We had two delicious seafood meals at the nearby market. The Shoya Noodles (free for guests) at the hotel (from 9.30 p.m.) was delicious.
