What a journey!
What a journey! We took the FlixBus from Dubrovnik, little knowing that this trip would be very long! The first hurdle was the border (this took time), but by far the worst was the road between Kotor and Budva. It is under construction - so this added about 40 min to our drive time. Generally, I think it might be a cultural thing. People are very blunt and somewhat abrasive. The level of hospitality needs a real improvement. There are a few gems, we had a really good experience at MB Ice Club - friendlier staff and service in Budva. I've been coming to Budva every few years since 1999. It's a quick flight from other European cities (35 minutes from Belgrade!) and has the unbeatable combination of mountains and beaches, old and new. Budva has beautiful mountains and sea, but the people are quite frankly the worst people I have ever met in my life. Nearly everyone is incredibly miserable and rude. There are tons of scams, people will constantly be blackmailing you for money. I was screamed and shouted at and threatened if I didn't give scammers their demands. This happened every day over something or another. For anyone thinking I am am misunderstanding the culture, perhaps, but I am married to an eastern European. This was something else and even my wife couldn't stand the people. Budva was a shock after the beautiful quiet villages of Kotor, Dobrota and Perast. We were very disappointed with the huge developments being built along the beach, turning the town into an ugly & cheap looking resort for mass tourism. Budva is an interesting city.
Budva is an interesting city. The Old Town is good and particuarly rate the Citadel. Less crowded than Kotor as fewer toutist groups. The main beach resort is fine and an alternative to the Old Town. We did have one poor meal in the beach area, suggest that Old Town is better area for eating. Bus station is about 15 minutes walk inland. It is about 30 minutes drive to Cetinje (taxi to Cetinje cheaper than taxi to Kotor).
