Spreading for hundreds of kilometres from the mouth of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the largest city by area in Europe and is liberally covered in pristine forests rising up into the outlying hills. South of the unassuming city hall lies a vibrant waterfront known as Aker Brygge, which in summer is full of bustling outdoor restaurants and bars.
For the prettiest buildings head to affluent inner-city suburbs of Frogner and Fagerborg, or admire the traditional Scandinavian wooden houses of Bygdøy and Holmenkollen. Monumental buildings include the Royal Palace which runs daily tours and the Akershus Festning, which is a medieval castle that also served as a military base and provides impressive views of the Oslofjord. Oslo City Hall, or rådhus, offers even more distinctive architecture and it is the location of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Nature is never far away in Oslo which is ringed by an archipelago of islands which are extremely popular in summer. Hiking, kayaking and sailing are all easily achievable within the city limits. Just as popular, are the many museums. The national Museum houses Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream and Viking Ship Museum containing long-lost relics from Norway’s Viking past.

We were traveling through for one night, and have now returned for a few days. Enjoying walking around the city and the easy of moving about. We went to the Daimond League Athletics, The Bislett Games last night. Looking forward to more days in Oslo. The Fram Museum is a must do. Not often you get the chance to stand in and on history. The architecture is realy cool and there are many modern buildings between the historic ones. The city center is small so you can explore on foot. What stood out to our eyes was the trash in the streets and many homeless people asking for money. There is so much to see and do in Oslo.The excellent transport system makes it really easy to get about by bus, tram or train. Fjord hopping, museums, walking tours, galleries are all to be enjoyed. There is some stunning architecture and a lot of history to learn about. There is plenty to do at night too - opera, theatres, bars and restaurants.
