Spreading for hundreds of kilometres from the mouth of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the largest city by area in Europe and is liberally covered in pristine forests rising up into the outlying hills. South of the unassuming city hall lies a vibrant waterfront known as Aker Brygge, which in summer is full of bustling outdoor restaurants and bars.
For the prettiest buildings head to affluent inner-city suburbs of Frogner and Fagerborg, or admire the traditional Scandinavian wooden houses of Bygdøy and Holmenkollen. Monumental buildings include the Royal Palace which runs daily tours and the Akershus Festning, which is a medieval castle that also served as a military base and provides impressive views of the Oslofjord. Oslo City Hall, or rådhus, offers even more distinctive architecture and it is the location of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Nature is never far away in Oslo which is ringed by an archipelago of islands which are extremely popular in summer. Hiking, kayaking and sailing are all easily achievable within the city limits. Just as popular, are the many museums. The national Museum houses Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream and Viking Ship Museum containing long-lost relics from Norway’s Viking past.

What a great city with a blend of very old European...
What a great city with a blend of very old European architecture and very modern public buildings. Transportation is easily accessible and there are so many sightseeing options it’s hard to pick only a few for a short stay. The Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Fram & Kon Tiki museums, and the outdoor Norwegian cultural museum were fabulous. We had just 2 days and could have spent 5-6. Our flight was delayed so we only had an evening there - but a long one since the sun does not set until close to midnight. We loved walking around sites and parks. Wish we could have visited a museum as we had planned, but even so the experience was great. Oslo was pleasant and lively. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Oslo. Everyone we met was exceptionally welcoming. I'm booked to go back for the Christmas Markets. If you are low-cost traveller, 2 nights are very ok. You can visit all monuments and travell through all Oslofjord islands within 3 days. But prices for cocktails, restaurants and even food are really crazy. You must be ready for that. The location is great — not in the city center, but very convenient: just a 5-minute walk to the metro station, and only 4 stops to the main train station.
