Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.
Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.

Funchal is a relatively large city (proportionally to the island's size) that has small city vibes; it's filled with history and has its charm.
Though very touristy, you can find many spots with local life (this in March/April). This could be very different during high season. Climate/temps is also great.
Even though it's pretty steep in some parts, the city is very walkable (for those that don't mind getting the steps in), though taxis are a great option to get around
Must dos/pros:
- Monte cable car
- Carreiros do Monte (sled rides)
- Botanical garden
- Boat tour to Desertas islands
- Levada walks/tours
- Private or group tours of the Island (I recommend Hit the Road Madeira - they're the best hands down!)
- Many good restaurants
- the people are very nice and friendly
Cons:
- In some parts the city is extremely steep and for people with mobility problems this may be an issue
- Depending how many cruise ships are docked, the sudden inflow of tourists can be a pain
- 5G towers everywhere (this is especially important for people that are sensitive to nnEMFs and/or give a sh*t for their health - don't forget to soak in the sun and ground as much as possible to counter the bad nnEMF effects)
- Mercado dos Lavradores is pretty but a tourist trap (worth the visit but not for shopping)

There is plenty to see and do in Funchal.
There is plenty to see and do in Funchal. Withing the old town you will find many restaurants along with shops and the old market.
Moving around the south of the island using the public busses is very easy, if you plan to do this, we would suggest buying a multi-day travel tickets for the duration of your stay: available at kiosks on the front at Funchal. Google Maps worked very well with planning trips using the local transport. Travelling to the north of the island we found hard to organise using the public transport is not easy, our suggestion would be to hire a car for these trips or join one of the organised trips which we did avoiding parking issues at the popular locations.
If you plan to walk the lavedas, plan you trips ahead of arriving on the island to avoid frustration when trying to work out where to join/exit the walks.

We really liked Funchal!
We really liked Funchal! HOwever, most accomodations are very noisy because of the road traffic, scooters, shouting people on the street, etc. so one has to really choose wisely!!! Funchal offers a lot, mountains, gardens, elevation gain, boat tours, festivals, nice people and food, and calm atmosphere.

I found Funchal town to be very clean and larger than expected. Interesting older part but generic modern area which was less interesting. Nice sea front and beautiful town park. The cable car up to the gardens at Monte Palace was a nice experience. We enjoyed a long levada walk in the mountains and catamaran boat trip along the coast and saw dolphins. There is much more to explore so I would like to return to the island in the future. Perfect weather and temperature for an active holiday.

Tourist advice was plentiful and very well spoken staff.
Tourist advice was plentiful and very well spoken staff. Bus services on time and frequent. The majic dolphin boat for whale watching and free spirit for mountain hikes.
Red wine so low cost and great quality. Local pizza not so good go to Pizza hut on the seafront. Very freindly people and as an ageing human all young people were very polite on transport services.
Great atmosphere, good climate although a little humid at times but a very generous island that keeps on giving surpridse after surprise.
The best thing related to the property is that it really seemed to be a genuine house of a Madeiran family. Lots of things previously used by the family, which in our view is a family of intelectuals, are still in the house like furniture, books, nice music. Beautiful garden and lots of flowers. Many facilities that bring you close to the facilities of your own home. Elsa is a very helpful and friendly person. Local restaurants with excellent food and store are at walking distance. Good price for what the property has to offer.
A family owned hotel apartment, the owner is a sweet man that takes care of you from the moment you arrive, till the last moment you leave the property. They bring fresh bread to your door every morning, they recommend you the best local restaurants. My tip: let the owner tell you where to go and where to eat, then you will enjoy Madeira from the local point of view and not instagram and bloggers!
P.s: the sea view balcony is a blessing and although you are in Funchal , you’re still away from punks and drunk tourists!
Staff were friendly, helpful and polite. The breakfast was okay, not great. Poor selection of fruit, coffee machines always dirty. I then managed to get into a different type of breakfast to keep going during my time there, given that I had 14 days to stay in Madeira. If you decide to have breakfast outside, you need to look out for pigeons as they constantly come to your table and try to steal your food!
The view from the restaurant is mostly to the pool, not a sea view. But still okay.
Superb hotel. We had a lovely spacious, sea view room. Comfortable beds and quiet at night. Breakfast was good with lots of options. Staff very friendly and warm. We rented a car and were able to park for free on site (be careful there are limited spaces). Pools and garden were very pleasant to enjoy time relaxing if not out exploring Madeira. Bus stop just outside to get you into central Funchal - a forty minute walk otherwise, or for the aerobús to the airport.
- good location, close to the ocean, old town, the port, the bus terminal and shops;
- Topázio apartment is very modern and stylish in the recently renovated building;
- all systems in the apartment were functioning properly except the alarm system;
- silent elevator;
- personnel from Hotel Madeira that manages apartments is very responsive;
- early check-in was very helpful;
- supplementary bottle of wine an a cake on arrival were very nice.
It was in an excellent location, right in the middle of the high street. 5 minutes walk from the farmer's market and old town funchal. The Kitchen was fully equipped to use ( although we did not use it as we ate out) the shower had plenty of hot water. There was a washing machine in the apartment. It was very nice of them to provide a small welcome goodie kit containing sugarcane honey cookies, a 5cl bottle of Madeira wine and Madeira bananas.
Two pools, one near sea and access to the water. Restaurant fine with standard Madeiran cuisine. Western edge of hotel district and access to plenty of restaurants within 20 minutes walk and good location generally. Charming setting and gardens give a character set apart from the many soulless mega hotels in western Funchal. Generally friendly staff. Very good value for money, was half the price of similar options at the time of booking
What a wonderful little gem in central Funchal. Only stayed one night due to flight disruption but would happily go back. Staff are beyond helpful and so friendly (unlike one other hotel we stayed in). Room was gorgeous, air conditioning a bonus. Loved the free Madeira and chocolates, a generous touch.
Despite it being on a side street I had the best sleep of our entire time on Madeira.
The breakfast basket was delicious and unexpected.
A very nice apartment, clean and very well located if you want to explore the island and also stay close to the city. Literary the best sunset view on the island, we loved spending time on the balcony drinking wine and eating delicious Madeira food. Maria was really nice and hospitable and always was in contact in case we had any questions. The overall experience was really good and positive, can only recommend!
The accommodation is excellent - the standards of service are outstanding and we had a lovely stay. The garden on site is almost like a botanical garden...the location is fantastic and super close to the Lido beach complex. You can easily walk to the main centre of Funchal or to nice locations like Praia Formosa. Madeira is an amazing island and staying at the hotel made our holiday even more memorable.
First of all every staff in this hotel was lovely. All smiling and checking on you. We stayed at the 1 bedroom apartment and the balcony view was amazing. The Forum Madeira shopping centre is close. This hotel is located in the edge of Funchal so it is a bit isolated and quiet, beside a beach which is exactly what we wanted. I would stay here again.
Beautiful quinta located near to the old town, with a lovely garden surrounded by a banana plantation, passion fruit and papaja trees, looking at the ocean. The owner and his family were extremely friendly and helpful and told us a lot about Madeira, Funchal and the history of the property. A nice bakery and small grocery store at walking distance.
We are very satisfied with our stay in FourViews Baia. Nice room, very good cleaning service, excelent breakfast, long check out, free pool, wellness, great bars etc. One of the best hotels, what I visited. Location near old town, free parking.If I come back to Madeira, I will only stay in Baia. Thanks
Well located in Sao Martinho within 20 minutes walk to the center, a lot of good restaurants in the vicinity. Clean, spacious rooms. A good choice of fruits for breakfast (paradoxically, absent in many other Madeira hotels). Comfortable beds and pillows. In all, an excellent value for money.
Location was great in a building nextdoor to Forum Madeira shopping center. Large (by Madeira standards) Pingo Doce supermarket was on the lower floor. Location was well connected to the airport and center of Funchal by bus. Apartment had included parking. Basic cooking equipment was there
The apartment has a good location in Funchal and it's very nice.
Close by there is a cenvenient public parking spot (4,50 EUR for 24h) and it is nice that you can use some of the services of the Hotel Madeira (which manages the apartment) that is very close (for example, the pool).
The hotel is super close to everything, including the marina and main street of Funchal. It's location is perfect, especially for first time visitors of Madeira. The staff is nice, helping the guests to have a great stay. The pool is fine, but a bit small.
We had a great stay at the Next Hotel. They upgraded us to an ocean front room that was amazing. Great value for the price. location was great as well. 10 min walk to town and 3 min walk to a ton of restaurants. would stay again if in Madeira.
