We were in Marvão on April 4-6 for weekend hikes in the area and it was a pleasure to find such hospitality from this amazingly warm and friendly couple who ran the place. They made every effort to go above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and satisfied with the facilities and the excellent level of service. We will definitely return for another stay and highly recommended the El Rei Dom Manuel to anyone visiting the area.
This 3-star hotel is located in Portagem, on the banks of the Sever River, where guests can enjoy a public pool. It has free WiFi and views of the historic village of Marvão.

The view from the hotel is spectacular, especially from the restaurant area. The pousada is part of the old castle's village with very narrow streets. The staff is very friendly.
Offering a bar, Varanda Do Alentejo provides accommodations in Marvão. There's a private entrance at the guest house for the convenience of those who stay.

Exceptional views. Nice restaurant. Just check on the size of the room you get. Most seemed fine but ours was extremely small. I’m could hardly fit into the bathroom and I am not a big guy. The room was fine but small. The staff was wonderful and if you get a regular sized room, you will truly enjoy this place.

The guest house was impeccable, a large and spacious house with a wonderful balcony overlooking the valley. Our hostess was friendly, warm and very obliging. A wonderful stay in a super spot. Highly recommended.

A gem of a village, a living piece of history and the people are so friendly. The castle is incredible. A walk around on the walls is just super. Mighty way to see the village and the vistas of the countryside below.

It was really quiet, which we like.
It was really quiet, which we like. There are festivals that might appeal to some people. We enjoyed the museum of archeology in the village. The village may be difficult for people with mobility challenges.

Marvao has a wonderful walled village and castle worth visiting. Not as commercial as Obidos, with fewer restaurants, shops and tourists but spectacular views from a more preserved castle with well manicured gardens.

We stayed at Dom Dinis, overlooking the valley below, in December 2023. Hardly any tourists, wonderfully friendly area. Be sure to visit the church (Igreja de Santiago) of which Saramago wrote on his journey around Portugal! We ate at the excellent Varanda do Alentejo, the lamb stew was fantastic.

The castle is a must see.
The castle is a must see. The views from all directions were unobstructed and gave one the feeling of what it must have been like centuries before when the castle was used as a defensive weapon. Well worth the trip and one had access to almost the entire outer wall.

We stayed in Marvão for 3 days, 2 nights and spent the days touring around. I HIGHLY recommend taking the biking tour with Rail Bike Marvão, it's 16km through the heart of Marvão's nature.
I also HIGHLY recommend you visit the small town or Castelo de Vide.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Hotel is full of character and the room with terrace we stayed in was beautiful with amazing views. Breakfast was good and all you could want. If you are driving it is easy to park near the hotel once you navigate driving through the Stone arches to actually get into the walled town and then drive through the narrow streets! Totally worth it as the location is stunning
The location was great (within the fortified walls of Marvao, walking distance to everything). Note that this property has two units: the larger is on the second story with more windows and light, a balcony and views over the city walls. The first floor unit is small and quite dark with small windows looking at the walls.
