If Viseu was near the ocean I would've moved there...
If Viseu was near the ocean I would've moved there inmediately. Lovely streets to wander around, parks and local shops and restaurants. Lovely architecture to admire and just love the ambience. The N2 national road passes through here and it's close to a great metal festival.

Viseu is a gorgeous little city with rich historical tales, medieval buildings, cute cafes, and lush gardens. I really loved this city and became impressed with how clean and safe it felt, as a young woman. I really want to visit this city again. Can’t say that for most of the cities in Portugal but Viseu was just so charming.

The city is so clean, the amenities are fantastic, the people are very friendly and relaxed. Everything you need is there and it has great history and wonderful parks and gardens. A gem of a city. The location is perfect for trips to places like Douro Valley and Serra de Estrela. Also a good location for cyclists who can access purpose built cycle routes on old the old railway line. Eating out is very affordable. Pay the two euro fee to go up to the museum above the cathedral it is probably the best attraction for two euros we have ever visited and the views down onto the square are lovely. Look out for wildlife along the river and around the fortifications. We saw otter, kingfisher and Salamanda.

Given that the weather was very good, and we didn't have a lot of time, we managed a good wander around the city and particularly enjoyed wandering around the park at Mata do Fontelo. We also enjoyed wandering around the old town.

Viseu is a very nice town, not too big so easy access to monuments etc. Heavy rain forced my wife & I to seek temporary shelter in a small cafe. The wine was 1 Euro for a “Kimi” pour (quite a large portion). We stayed until well after the rain stopped!

Viseu is a charming, walkable, old city with a good balance...
Viseu is a charming, walkable, old city with a good balance of old charm and modern amenities. The cathedral area, for example, is within walking distance of a shopping mall, which is near the bus station. It seemed like there was a good cultural buzz as well, with several musical and film events taking place in the park and around town, indoors and out. The Casa Conselheiro Alfonso de Melo museum, right in city center, showcases---for free entry-- the writer's good-sized personal collection of Portuguese Post-Impressionist paintings, furniture, ceramic dish sets, and various other home objects d'arte. From there, a 15-minute walk through the narrow, cobbled streets of Old Town brings you to the cathedral and Nacional Museum Grāo Vasco, the gift shop of which offers a huge book selection, some in English and other languages. There are manors and gardens worth visiting outside the city as well, I understand, but they require some private transport.

This hotel is a real gem in the heart of Viseu. The spa area is amazing, we loved it. If you want a Japanese breakfast, you need to book it in advance. But we were unlucky, because they do not serve it on Mondays. The continental breakfast we ordered was simply superb, with a lot of choice. Overall, we felt like VIPs during our stay. When we checked out, we met the owner of the hotel, and she told us her inspiring story about opening this place. We wish this place and its owners great success and prosperity!

We had a wonderful stay at Onix Hotel in Viseu! Everything was great, especially the delicious breakfast with plenty of options. The parking was convenient, and we enjoyed the pool and sauna—though the sauna is small, it was a nice addition. One thing to note is that the hotel doesn’t provide slippers, and you need to bring some essentials to use the pool. Despite this, our experience was excellent, and we will definitely stay here again. Highly recommended!
