We loved Nis. One of the things that we particularly enjoyed was the food. There are lots of excellent restaurants around where you can buy a typical Serbian barbecue. I would particularly recommend a restaurant called 'Izvor' and the 'Izvorski complet' - this includes a selection of meats and cheeses presented in its own unique way.
We managed to do quite a bit of sight seeing including the Fortress, local parks, Bubanj, Cegar and an archaeological site which was a summer residence of Constantin the Great. In addition to this there is a great shopping mall called 'Delta'.

As I have said in my comments, you have to visit a restaurant/s with live music ( generally Fridays and Saturdays only ) . However, if you plan to do this, you have to make a reservation a week or more before the date. So, make a reservation on the phones of the restaurants at the internet sites. Look for the top restaurants in NIS. Otherwise, everything is full booked. Prices are more than affordable. NIS is not exactly a vegan / vegetarian friendly city. Here is a joke, that explains this. "Two vegetarians enter a restaurant in NIS. They ask the waiter, what he would recomend for vegetarians. Call a taxi, replied the waiter."

Nis is a small town but has some good restaurants and bars, great for a short stay. We have been for 3 days and 1 months, so have done the tourist and the day to day living. Good shopping mall, easy to reach by bus, pay the conductor 70 dinars each, use google maps for the bus numbers to catch. Taxis are cheap, just make sure they put the meter on

Beautiful little town with great people and food.
Beautiful little town with great people and food. An awesome fortress, a quay along the river, huge central park Chair, Cele Kula and Niska Banja (some 6 miles from the city center) are among my favorite. A lot of great cafes (my favorite Gnezdo, next to the Mosque in the very center), to sit long hours and enjoy coffee. And the food, whenever you end up eating in numerous kafanas, one can enjoy local, very soul soothing and comforting cuisine, and very affordable prices. Taxis are super cheap so you can take around exploring city and nearby localities (avg. taxi ride about 3 - 5 euros). Intl. airport just 3 km away from the center.

Great hospitality, lot of tourist from different nationality (Macedonians, Bulgarian, Russians, Greeks...) , clean town with lot of parks, Nice old fortress with monuments, Shopping malls, extra delicious food and service in the traditional restaurants (better for you to reserve two weeks before your arrival-they are full :-) ). We visited also Niska Banja (spa Centre). For two day visit we didn't have a time to see all natural beauties around Nish. My recommendations!!!
Everything about the Ambassador Hotel in Niš was exceptional! The location is perfect, right in the city center, making it easy to explore the town. The room was modern, spacious, and impeccably clean, with all the amenities I could ask for. The staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive, making me feel right at home. Breakfast was delicious and super local.
I liked the antique charm of the property. It was like walking back in time, and you can sense this in the music that was played every night in the bars. The hotel was in a historical part of Niš where gourmet cuisine and music intertwine.
Extraordinary small French like hotel situated high above Nis, with a pool and a spectacular view over the entire city, especially from room 4A. Car definitly required to get there.
The host was perfect. The hotel near the city centre. Perfect parking. Breakfast was good. The room was clean. In future if i go back to Nis, i will stay here for sure.
Extremely kind and helpful staff, stylish and well organised hotel. Parking on site and everything you need during the stay. We'll be definitely back again.
