Izmir is a big bustling city.
Izmir is a big bustling city. Make sure you stay in the Alsancak area which is right by the sea and has lots of restaurants and bars. We used it as a base to visit Ephesus and Pamukkale, but to be fair it's a very long way to Pamukkale (12 hour day for three hours at Pamukkale).

This was my third trip to Izmir. It is fairly underrated.
This was my third trip to Izmir. It is fairly underrated. My best friend, who was born in Izmir, showed me the special treat (for a guy) of a Turkish razor shave, with an unexpected finish, at an unbelievably inexpensive price. Also navigated the excellent transit system (get the IzBan card) that consists of buses, trams, ferries, and commuter rail direct from the airport for a couple dollars, and any walking within the city is wonderful. Partake of the Turkish bath experience at Fes Spa, near the Esbas train station for a full body workover at less than $50, and you will feel like a different person. I did a all-day trip by minibus to Herapolis (sp?) and Pamukkale which was well worth it. Ephesus is reachable by transit, plus a short taxi trip. Local museums tell Turkish history -- visit the Ataturk Museum on the harbor, or the Turkish train museum across the street from Alsancak train station (for 1920-40s train memorabilia, it's a quick trip back 100 years!).

Much better for transit flights than Antalya or Istanbul bc...
Much better for transit flights than Antalya or Istanbul bc of metro station 5 mins walk form airport and very easy to take(you need 145 TLR cash for the ticket) and some not crazy expensive hotels right at the airport.
it takes just 20 min by train to get to the center. Izmir is beautiful city with long coast for walking, with huge park, with some old districts, some new streets. many restaurants, casts. Calm people, tasty food. Izmir is a mixture of Istanbul and Antalya, i think, but more easy to stay for a short period of time to enjoy turkish culture. i had 13h day time transit long stay: i slept at the hotel a bit, then worked and walked along the sea coast, along the streets, made many photos, ate tasty food and then ran to the airport to not miss my flight )))
It is worth to visit Izmir!

If you want to experience a regular Western-Turkish town,...
If you want to experience a regular Western-Turkish town, then Izmir can be your place. Be prepared for its size: it is a big city. It has an incredible bazaar, it is a seaside town, but the atmosphere around the seaside is not very special. The views are OK, but there is no beach walking distance from the city centre

We were in İzmir for a few days and wanted to stay in Alsancak this time. From there we used the ferry boat and the metro. Thanks to the good reviews, we decided to stay at the Hay Hotel. We were satisfied and felt safe. You can only get into the room with the room card via the elevator. The breakfast was sufficient and we liked it. The room was clean and the beds comfortable.
Absolute gem of a hotel, service fantastic, meals and club room excellent, location and view fantastic, I have stayed at more than 60 5 star hotels around the world and this hotel is up there with best of them.
More than highly recommended, you will not be disappointed.
Great location fantastic staff very friendly and welcoming.
Breakfast was very rich and good quality.

I definitely recommend this hotel.
They have a bar right beside where you can relax with a wine and pizza.
