If you want access to skiing/hiking/outdoors activities, beautiful scenery, affordable accommodations, and 1950s vibes, the Mora Inn is perfect. The staff is also extremely helpful and friendly. I mistakenly showed up for my reservation on the wrong date, and they accommodated me promptly and without any additional costs. The room was simple but clean, with good wifi and direct tv. The are some interesting looking arts and craft galleries and cafes within a 20min drive, although I visited on a Sunday, when businesses are understandably closed. Overall, this area is a quaint, less touristy alternative to the busier and more expensive Taos. I would absolutely return.
