Honolulu is a big city with big city things to do. You aren't going to run out of activities in a hurry. Oahu is a pretty heavily populated island - lots to do but lots of people. But it depends on what you're looking for in a Hawaiian experience. All amenities of a large city with the benefit of being on a tropical Island. Honolulu offers you everything you want and need but also gives you the opportunity to find quiet places. The beaches here are very crowded. If you have a car, driving 6 to 10 miles east give you beautiful beaches and not crowded. The bus can also take you there. Great busses. Inexpensive w friendly drivers. The can take you all around the island. Note where you want to go and then drive there. Honolulu is great for first time visit. It was a good base as we divided our time between car rentals to explore to quieter days walking and beach. It's a very accommodating city for all. We ate at places like Norths Shore food trucks, Monkey Pod and Steak Shack and Maui Brewery. It was really helpful as we have been exhausted when we arrived. This woman on the reception also kindly let us stay in the reception and their pool until we need to leave for our evening flight next day. She was really nice.
